I am just about to get a Velocity XT kit but am not sure which engine is best!

I want reasonable power (150), light weight, and not too expensive as I have a budget problem!

I am a first time builder, so am not sure of the additional work a Bike engine would require

well everyong has their own ideas but youd really be looking at a vauxhall 2 litre, zetec 1.8 or 2.0 or a toyota 4age. each have their merits and costs. youce got to do some research to find out which is best. scroll through the previous threads to see what everyone thinks

The Toyota engines seem pricey and rare, and the Zetec expensive to get any real power!

What will give the best power/weight etc for £1-1.5K?

I like the look of the Vauxhall, but looks as though alot of mods are required.

They way I am looking at it is a Bike is ideal for out of the box power for not bad money! Am I right in this assumption?

those little bike engines are ok if you build your kit real light, bieng a biker meself i bet the thing wont take the stick youll need to give it to move a locost for long before it goes POP...... and they aint cheap to fix. hope this helps

You might want to look at the toyota engine again - the best ones come from 1990 onwards toyota
corolla gti's. They are apx 130 bhp, and one seems to sell on ebay fairly often for about 300-
400 quid (the complete car!)

You can then get the bell housing from raw, fensport, or make your own.

The stock induction, ecu, ignition, etc is fine, but you may need to get a lowered velum to ge
t it under the velocity's bonnet. Again raw can supply this.

This has the advantage of running the engine as toyota intended, and you know the engine was working before you start!

Anyone done a Duratec yet? They seem to be really opoular and gerenrate more power than a Zetec.

Zetecs are a lot cheaper to get hold of and have a lot more tuning parts available. If you can get your hands on a duratec tho I'm sure it'd suit the car very well.

I agree with you, the Duratecs certainly seem rare!

If you plump for a duratec be very, very careful. I have heard several tales of woe regarding dogdy motors that are not what they seem.

I have decided to go for a Vauxhall 2.0 EX 16V.

I can get one for £350, and a pair of weber 45's for £175. All I need then is the bellhousing, manifold etc. Should give about 180-190BHP with an ultralight flywheel!
