Abingdon Sprint - first time out for me & Luego
Steve Lovelock - 13/6/10 at 07:47 AM

Yesterday I did the Abingdon Sprint in the Velocity. It was great fun. It took a few sessions to get used to the idea that it is desired to drive round bends with all four tyres squealing. I wasn't as quick as the other cars in my category but they were all Westfields with soft tyres, no windscreens, heaters etc. so it wasn't too bad. By the end of the day I was just a second off the slowest competitor and my driving was pretty grim to say the least!

I couldn't recommend sprinting enough, it was the most fun I have had in a car for years, much, much better that a track day. Go on, give it a go.

Sounds really cool. Does your car have to meet certain regulations (like race cars) and do you need a race licence to do these? Sounds like fun!
I really wanna get my build finished!! Off for a session at the scrap yard today!
Cheers.

My car is a totally standard (if such a thing exists) and I only had to do a few silly things like put yellow tape on the battery leads. I bought a suit for £50 and a helmet for £120 and that was about it. You do need a license but it is a non race one which you can order on line for £37. It was amazing and something I will do regularly now.

You have got to get a in car camera fitted for next time, so you car see what you have done.

Steve a few questions if I may.

What class did you enter in?
Does your car have a CAT fitted?

Just a few points I need to get cleared for myself.

Sounds like you had a brilliant day, Steve - Just had a look at your vid (and, as the guy says - you need an in-car camera to record something like that fully!) watched another linked vid showing a TVR doing the Abingdon course in 48 secs - I'm sure the Velocity would do better on the corners than that heavy lump! - how did the XE Velocity do, timewise?

Blackpool Steve!

I ordered a mounting bracket for my video camera, it arrived yesterday, after I left for the event. Next time for sure.

I was in the road going kit and specialist production car class for 1700cc and over. This is basically kit cars and Lotus Elise's and the like.

No cat, no requirement for one. The car has to have an MOT and insurance.

You should have popped over to say hello. My car was number 140.First time out for me in that car and had a blast. Came away with 3rd in class and 14th over all.
Best Abingdon time was 47.05 and bently course 50.34. I have been sprinting for 25+ years and still have not got it out of the blood
Keep going you will get faster
