The attached two pictures are my latest build progress - the first one shows the off-side engine mount made from 2 bits of box section and some 6mm steel plate. The angle of the plate is because I am using a BMW engine and the block sits at an angle. The second picture shows all three (both engine mounts and the gearbox mount). The angles on the gearbox mount are made of a short bit of box section cut on a diagonal corresponding to the angle of the bobins.

I also have a question - what is the minimum space that I can get away with between the top of the engine and the underneath of the bonnet?

Not yet Neil, but I have found a place a few miles away that sells them so I just need to find the time to have a look. Now that the engines in though, its all starting to look a bit scarey and more like a real car than a meccano kit. Once I get around to buying the wheels I'll have a rolling chassis with the engine in and it will really feel like I'm making progress.

Still trying to decide whether 1 cm clearance between the top of the engine and the bonnet, which is what I currently have is enough. I have a way of increasing the distance if I need to, but it will be a bit of a faff.

Any views anyone?

BTW I cannot take the credit for the welding. I cut all of the bits, but the guy from the garage around the corner did the welding.

I have about 5mm tops - at one point it was rubbing on the connector to the coil pack so I mad up some brackets to shift it down and back. Heat protection (i.e. metallic filmed glass fibre sheeting) is your solution to prevent blistering of the gel coat off the GRP...
