Wondering what others have done with their alternator set up on the V8 engined cars. I'm looking to relocate the alternator to the near side under the manifolds and downsizing while I'm at it. Possibly with a "pop brown"bracket. Also removing the water pump innards and pulley and running a Craig Davies setup. So just the crank and alternator pulley. It's a Vitesse engine btw. Interested to see what others have done, images would be good.

Hi, I also made my own brackets and mounted a 45amp alternator (think Ford Escort unit) down low on the LHS... see pics below. 2000miles, not fallen off yet.

I mounted the my alternator low low down on the opposite side to the starter. I made my own bracket from a butchered V8 engine mount. The mount also includes a crank sensor mount. If you can weld (I can't) is should be easy. Just make something from cardboard and then fabricate in steel. For me the only difficulty is that originally the alternator was up high and it was on the same v-belt as the water pump. The alternator acted as a tensioner. This meant my new alt bracket had to include a tensioning system and I had to fabricate a tensioner for the water pump belt. Fortunately Rover pedalled the RV8 to dozens of companies which in turn used dozens of front configurations. I managed to find a tensioner from a non-air conditioned v-belt Range Rover (I think) and bodged that.

From memory, I used a small Denso alternator on my Pinto engined Indy. It was small enough to be clear of the chassis and gave enough power out to keep the battery charged etc. I did have to make a bracket to mount it to the side of the engine, which was a bit of a fiddle, but not hard to do.

Just remember alternators don't like heat , if it's near to the exhaust manifold use a heat shield.

I was struggling for space with my V6 so I mounted the alternator in front of the engine and it runs backwards.

Cheers all, gone for a 'pop brown' bracket with some extra reinforcing, to mount a Lucas 45amp alternator low down on the near side.

Not a great picture of the alternator mounting but you can see what I replaced the water pump with to run an electric pump.

The belt is tensioned by a rod with LH/RH rod ends
