Nearly time to go...?
Worzey - 15/2/16 at 01:02 PM

So after 9 years of very happy Locost ownership it's very nearly time to say goodbye to the Velocity XT.

I've put a deposit down on a Caterham R400 (k-series) on Saturday and subject to all being well should be able to collect it in a couple of weeks. Don't worry, I'm not planning on turning my back on this forum as the wealth of information and friendships have been fun

I was planning on keeping the Velocity tucked up in the garage for a few more weeks and may even consider keeping it purely for trackdays given the astonishing performance it manages to delivery. It will be interesting to see how it compares with the R400...

Anyway, I've no idea what it might be worth so was wondering if the collective might be able to give me a rough guide based on the following awesome specification....

• SVA in 2005
• Toyota 1.6 4AGE 20v VVTi (c6k since IVA – 3k since rebuild)
• Hellier Performance head (flowed, polished and ported)
• Fast road cams (264)
• Fidenza lightweight flywheel
• Rotrex Supercharger (fitted by RAW engineering)
• 260bhp but retarded to 248bhp (with dyno plot to verify)
• Ford Type 9 gearbox
• DigiDash 2
• Omex 600 ECU
• Procomp adjustable coilovers (corner weighted at RAW)
• Wilwood Powerlight callipers (Front) with drilled / grooved discs all around
• Team Dynamics 15” wheels and Toyo R888’s
• Carbon cycle wings and aeroscreen
• GRP bucket seats
• Odyssey PC680 gel battery

What can I expect?

Not sure what it's worth but it will be easier to sell in a couple of months Time so if you wait till then I would wait .

That's the plan

Buy the Caterham while it's cold and keep the Velocity tucked up until the weather improves. Luckily I can get two cars in my garage so the space won't be an issue and I'm not in a rush to sell the Velocity.

I might take it to Stoneleigh with a large "For Sale" sign and/or list it on Pistonheads / Ebay.

I agree that would be best

I'm going to through a random number out there. Would £6,995 be totally outrageous for a 420bhp/ton car with that specification ? Too high / too low or about right?

ian locostzx9rc2 - 15/2/16 at 03:57 PM

I would put it up for £7995 if it was me

I'd agree good spec, I think someone would pay £8k for that (after they had driven it for sure)

Someone once said to me start high as you can always come down.

Start low and it's a bugger's muddle to try and go up!

Ive been out in Dave's car, and sure it was before the supercharger, WOW!!

Its a real nice car, and seemed from my pax ride to handle very well, although well to quick for my old age

Thanks Steve. Hopefully the R400 will be on a par. I almost went R500 but didn't think I needed a car that quick (I never thought I would say that). Hopefully I'll still be allowed to come to my he SKCC meets.

Its a good spec and has the added bonus of the supercharger which will add to the interest

I'd price it around 8.5k and see how it goes, I doubt it will hang around long enough to have to take it to Stoneleigh to sell

Without wishing to be an idiot I am curious to know what you hope to get from an R400 that you don't get out of your current car?

Good question. A number of reasons really...

I've always wanted a Caterham
It's slightly more practical and I can use it all year round (I could add weather gear, screen, etc to mine but can't be bothered)
I like the colour
The residuals are good so I won't lose too much on the investment

I know it doesn't make much sense but it's an itch I've wanted to scratch. I'm seriously thinking of keeping the Velocity as a track car as I have space for both. The wife says the Velocity is "part of the family" and doesn't want to see it go.
