My first attemp at a rebuild starts with this...

the plan is ...

new cam kit ( mild road ) inc tappets
full head job by rimmer brothers.
Hone

webber 4 barrel card kit.

how do you rate my chances Rescued attachment engine 006.jpg

I think I would buy a gallon of gunwash before committing to any expensive bits. It will ruin your stem seals, but I guess you would be replacing those anyway

Look in my archive, Mine was worse that that.

Nitromors or B&Q paint stripper will shift it.
But take all the precautions.

Crank may be OK, I stripped three engines (RV8's) all simmilar, all cranks fine, just needed a polish.

All bores were oval and 5 thou wear.
Rebore and new pistons for me.
Expensive!
Hone and rings if less wear.

I fitted new cam bearings, a viper hurricane cam, and new lifters.
(Must fit new lifters with a new cam, or you will get accelerated wear).

Fit new crank bearings & big ends. not that expensive.
You may just get away with grinding in all the valves.. Cheap fix, but labour intensive if you do it yourself!.

Have the block properly cleaned, its worth the money.
Why leave that hard black carbon granules in the engine to infect all your new bearings and honed / reground surfaces. Its an engine killer.

Rocker shafts... Any sign of wear / scoring trash them, as the ally supports get metal filings embedded in them, (its what causes the scoring), and will trash other bearings from the filings getting into the oil again.

RV8's are not cheap to do up. Mine has cost me over £1500 so far. for the hassle, I should have just bought a recon engine from RPI or Real Steel or V8tuners.

Oh well,, its fun rebuilding it..

PS... The black comes from lack of oil and filter changes ie sloppy maintenance / servicing. The oil ends up not being able to do its job, and doesnt keep the engine clean.
worn bores etc dont help either

Mine was in a worse state when I got it. Stripped it and got the block and heads acid dipped. Rebuild from there...

I'm trying to find someone locally with a decent video camera coz it now sounds awesome!!!! :-)

Yup... Rock ON Tommy

PS...

DONT paint anywhere inside the engine.
or your oilways will fill up with oily pain, and stuff the bearings etcc.

Fairly typical for one of these engines --- but if you start cleaning you have to do a good job.

To get the varnish off soak in cellulose gun wash thinners or styrene monomer (used for brush cleaning by GRP moulders).

After de-varnishing Steel/ferrous parts can be cleaned by caustic soada solution but for alloy parts use phosphoric acid (rust remover available from chandlers) or boil up with a few Rhubarb leaves (Borasic acid).

If it were me I'd just put the manifold and rockers covers back on and enjoy it as it is. Rover V8 rebuilds are expensive and in terms of bang per buck the ancient lump isn't great value.

For boracic acid, read oxalic acid, boracic acid comes from volcanoes
