The alt should turn clockwise. The smallest youl get is that off a diahastu charade which is plenty.

I thought an alternator worked going either way . The only reason I thought for direction was so the fan blades attached to the alt worked effectively..

Another source for a small alt is off the vitara

OH no they don't. Common mistake by mechanics is to take the alternator out of it's box and spin it to check the bearings. this is the most common form of alternator warranty return failure. On some of them it kills them because they spin them without checking rotation direction and it kills the new unit.

Be WARNED.

I've used a Bedford (maybe Vauxhall?) Rascal alternator which is pretty small and easy to wire.

The 2CV one is small but needs a separate regulator.

Have a search for the one Ned has used (off something Japanese) as it's smaller still.

EDIT: Having said all that, what engine you using? As the alt's I've listed all have a traditional 'V' pulley. What shape is yours? You can fit any pulley I guess but it's bound to be effort maching a pulley to fit whatever alt you use!

I put a ford pulley on my charade alt. Therwhole in the pulley was too big so I went to an auto electrics place and the blokey gave me a spacer to mount a pulley off a lucas alt to a bosch alt. Fit a treat. Gave him a adrink for his trouble, well chuffed.
