Need Slightly Wider Rear Arches For A Leugo Velocity
The Great Fandango - 25/5/07 at 01:39 PM

In my infinite wisdom I bought a lovely set of OZ alloys from a member of the WSCC without bothering to check the offset etc.

I'm happy as Larry. They're immaculate, no stratches etc. All have virtually new 205mm wide Yokohama rubber. All for £200.

The cycles wings are fine BUT...

...the outer edge of the tyres touch the lipping of the rear wheel arches.

As it's a track car I've simply cut a section of the lipping off to solve the problem.

I'm now thinking longer term, aesthetics, and the possibility of SVA next year.

Can anyone recommend a wider set of suitable arches?... Where would I get them from and how much are we talking?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

How wide do arches need to be?

I am nto sure of any wider rear arches of the top of my head.....if there are none about might it be possible to fabricate an insert to go between the arch and the side/rear panel to push the standard arches out enough to achieve what you want?

I need another 5-10mm wide to avoid the rubbing... Looking at the likes of offical caterham arches (but way too expensive) - they appear to have a good inch on the Luego arches.

Everyone is always looking for that extra inch.

Make them. It'll be cheaper, more rewarding and you'll get the size you want.

Take two pieces of ply or mdf and scribe a line around your existing arches. That gives you your profile.

Take a jigsaw and accurately cut that line - DONT CUT THE WOOD IN TWO, just the line!.

Take a sheet of ally as wide as you want the arches (plus the thickness of the two pieces of wood) and pop it into slot cut on wood. Move wood pieces apart. Now make a copy of the outside contour or arch with a piece of wood, get some filler/plaster and fill one side of mould and shape.

Wait to dry, grease/wax and lay gelcoat. Layup 2-3 layers of matting. When set, remove arch, make another.

Just ensure you reverse pattern for 2nd, or you'll end up with 2 LH or 2 RH wings

You should be able to get both wings done in about 2 hours each, from start to finish. Better than spending a couple of hundred imho.
