saigonij - 28/6/07 at 06:52 PM

ok, what hand brake cable do i get...

i brought a sierra rear disc handbrake cable from butron last night and its way WAY too long...

what have other people done?

Cut the cable in the middle and clamp it
that's what i did and it works ok
I don't know if this will pass sva though

Cut it down at one end, keep the square eyelet on one end and braze or weld it on.

When adjusted the weld is hidden in the convoluted rubber boot at the caliper end so you can smear it with grease to try and delay the inevitable failure!

would a Westfield one work?

i think a box of cable clamps like in the other thread is about £3 for 4, if that, from big B&Qs.

alternatively, i think you can get new ends that attach to the cable with grub screws from MK, mac1, mnr? et al, for similar money but the cable clamps are by far the easiest.

depends how much money you want to throw at it i suppose, but it seems a false economy to me.

Chop it in half and use some cable clamps to rejoin it shorter

Proper job....

cutting and rejoining is fine for MOT and SVA?

BenB - 28/6/07 at 09:00 PM

SVA went okay for me.... Can't see why MOT would be a problem unless the cables slip in the clamp allowing slack to develop... but even then it's a quick fix!!

You can buy a proper end fitting from MK iirc. Just cut the cable to the right length and fit this little jobbie Rescued attachment handbrakenipplethingy.jpg
