Sorn and driving on the road legally

Well, I want to get my car to a local garage to do some engine work and tune up. Currently the Leader is Sorn'd with a current MOT and insured. Question: Are there any circumstances that I can drive the car to the garage legally? Or is the only legal option to tax it?

You can only drive it to or from a required MOT test (pre-booked) or to a place of repair once it's failed the test. If the local garage is a test station get them to "book" it in for a test. Then if you're stopped, you're covered.

When you say local, how local?

My local village garage is about 1/2 a mile away along a rural back road. I'd probably just carefully drive it there (particularly as it's insured!), but I wouldn't if it was driving 3 miles across Coventry etc.

Not condoning anything, just speaking hypothetically of course


If it's a local garage, can't they just pick it up for you for nowt?

By local I mean a couple of miles but its not rural. My job dictates I can't go with a 'fingers crossed' approach although I'm sorely tempted.

Definitely just ask them to pick it up then - shouldn't charge you anything for it if you're getting your engine tuned there etc. (unless you've never ever used them before)

Not worth any risks then! get them to collect on trade plates might cost a bit extra but a far safer option.

The ANPR cameras fitted to police cars will show it's on SORN and that you have MOT and tax, if stopped what lie are you going to use???
Cops deal with this all the time, there is no legal way round it, tax it or trailer, drive at your own risk

If the tax is anything like my bec then do as speedy said, will cost you a tenner, assuming you loose a month. Cheaper than trailering and easier too

I would expect that it would invalidate your insurance.

The tax it and revert to Sorn claiming back the tax afterwards seems the best way to go. Obvious really but hadn't thought of that!
