Spiral sheathed wire
steve m - 2/9/12 at 09:53 AM

Im after some 12v wire that is pre spiraled (if that makes sense!)

I will be fitting two buttons on my steering wheel for indicators, as the dash mounted switch is a tad to far for me to reach, so the idea is spiral wire round the steering column, to allow for full left/right deflection,

I could just make some up, all neatly taped etc, but pre spiraled would be so much neater

Any idea's were i could get some ?
needs to a min of 4 wires, but more is fine

Steve

Telephone cable and relays?

The stuff to connect a car to a caravan? It is more than 4 cores and it's designed for lighting circuits so should be high enough rating, just not sure how tight the coils are though.

Something like this;

I very much doubt that 20amp cable will be flexible enough for this sort of use. If you use relays you could use easily obtainable "curly" telephone or microphone cable, or even a keyboard extension cable. Have a search on eBay for "curly cable".

I did have a curly lead from an old CB radio microphone, worked well.

ETA, removed due to getting mixed up with the indicators when the wheel is turned through 180 deg, just bear that in mind as you do look a fool putting the left ind on to turn right !!!!

Have a look at the Vectra steering column ( I'm sure other cars will have it too but I know vec's have this and it works) They have a cartridge behind the steering wheel with a ribbon in it that is long enough to furl and unfurl as the wheel is turned, this allows for the stereo controls on the wheel to work, could be worth checking to see if you could mount it somehow behind your steering wheel.

Whats your thinking for the buttons? will they just flash a certain amount of times, only if you hold the button, or will you need a cancel button too?

Hi,

Look at all kinds of new cars, the airbags are fitted with the same catridge style behind the steering wheel,

I used it in a few builds now and it works like a dream. Some of the new VW golf are using some neat and small ones easy to fix behind the steering wheel.

I thought about it then realised i only ever used the wheel mounted switches on my daiy car whilst the wheel was straight ahead

Its hard to beat donor column stalk switches for practicality really. Very durable and comfortable to use. I couldnt get on with dash mounted light switches so ended up moving these to the stalks too. It helped declutter the dash and I can now flash headlamps without having to lean over and operate 2 switches.

20amps!!! what are you making a jet powered horn?

ashg - 24/9/12 at 01:58 PM

indicator bulbs are 21watt for front and rear and 5 for sides but worst case scenario if they are all 21watt thats 12amps
