r1 fuel pump help

Hello

fuel injected 5PW R1 2002

I know this sounds a bit dumb but can anyone tell me where to put the fuel pump for my haynes roadster BEC?

And anything else i should know when sorting this out

I understand that i have to run a fuel return line to the tank is that right?

Link it up

Fuel Tank out > low pressure filter > pump inlet > high pressure filter > fuel rail > regulator (at the end of the fuel rail) > tank

I used an 10mm glass low pressure filter from ebay similar to

and a Ford Focus 1.6 petrol high pressure one from Halfrauds

I used the original 5PW pump on mine. Mounted it to the bottom of the tank. Seem fine and already has the required inlets outlets.

I would use either the original bike pump if you have it and you havent had your tank made yet, or a universal bosch 3 bar pump.

IIRC mine is this one:-

Mine's as Jim describes using a Bosch in-line pump and a 2lt Astra filter.

If using an in-line pump mount it as low as possible either below or level with the bottomof the tank, so the feed in is gravity fed. They don't like to suck the fuel (tends to cavitate and create bubbles) as it would have to with the pump mounted higher.

Have got a 5pw pump but not sure how where or to fix it!!

There are no fixing holes in the pump so i guess i may need a fixing flange to push down on the gasket or something

I presume it goes inside the tank although it has wiring on it which is a worrying

There are two inlet/outlets on top (not sure which is which) or is one a breather?

does the fuel return just drop in to the filler neck?

A photo of one fitted to a tank would be great or advice from someone who knows i would appreciate

Just to close this one out for you

Here's a couple of pics. These are looking from the back of the car. The pump mounts externally on the underside of the fuel tank. I've got a hole that the pump goes into with a thicker mounting plate section to bolt the pump to so that the bolts don't penetrate all the way through.
The silver hose is the return feed from the engine, The black one with the Yamaha clip is the outlet. The connector is the pump 12V supply from the ECU. The unused connector is the fuel level indicator. Basically it tells you when it is low as the bike didn't have a graduated level. No point wiring it up as I'm led to believe that it goes through some electrotrckery in the bike dashboard to turn on the light.

I'll probably fit a plate on the car to protect the pump and hoses but for the time being it should be fine.
