Longest build time.
spiderman - 23/4/11 at 06:11 PM

Hi guys,
Whats the longest build time? Started my in 1999 not quite finished.

slingshot2000 - 23/4/11 at 06:20 PM

Well . . . . . . . . . my Westfield chassis was built in 1988 and it has never been finished !

However, I have only owned it a couple of years and only really started working on it over this last winter.

Regards
Jon

40inches - 23/4/11 at 06:24 PM

My MK was manufactured in 1999, I bought it as a part built in 2001.
It's now so close to completion I can taste it

Ninehigh - 23/4/11 at 06:34 PM

You could say I started 2 years ago, and so far I can see about 25% of the garage floor.

So at this rate I should be finished about 2235?

spiderman - 23/4/11 at 06:36 PM

Phew! I thought I was the only one.
Mind you I have picked up a couple of projects along the way.
Triumph gt6 MK 2/ cosworth saphire 4x4. plan to transfer the cosworth engine/ tranmission and running gear into gt6.

David Jenkins - 23/4/11 at 06:40 PM

Started in 1997 and finished, SVA'd and registered in 2005. Only 8 years -seemed like a lifetime...

big_wasa - 23/4/11 at 07:44 PM

Over six years now. its now drivable

Michael - 23/4/11 at 08:07 PM

Started mine June 1999.

IVA Passed Monday 18 April 2011, but now getting it ready for paint.

I did miss working on it for a year whilst a neighbour had an extension done, so could not get garage cleared to work on it.

Confused but excited. - 23/4/11 at 08:24 PM

Started seven years ago, can't wait to get to a rolling chassis.

MikeR - 23/4/11 at 08:47 PM

Damn, i'm not the longest build ....

Started in 2000 .... first thing i bought was a house

If i could get some time in the garage i'd have the roll bar in, the drive shafts measured up and the fuel tank bolted into place. At which point, with some wires here and there, some brake lines and some fuel lines it would drive under its own power.

Although everything would then need stripping back to get blasted and painted.

Daddylonglegs - 23/4/11 at 08:53 PM

Bought a pile of 25mm Box section steel for the chassis build in June 2005, and I'm all but there.

Hoping to get her legal and on the road by mid summer latest!

daniel mason - 23/4/11 at 09:11 PM

i started a year ago and am realy annoyed im not on the road already. not long to go now and after this week i will be ready for iva setup

rf900rush - 23/4/11 at 09:12 PM

My brother bought a jago geep in 1985.
Sold it of last year as bits.

Must be close to a record

myke pocock - 23/4/11 at 09:24 PM

Built entirely to the book by me and took 11 years!!!

scutter - 23/4/11 at 09:29 PM

Where is Cheffy, I expect his has been a long time coming?

ATB Dan.

907 - 23/4/11 at 10:26 PM

This thread has got me thinking so I've just been looking through a pile of receipts.

I was several months planning but the earliest I can find is,

27/10/01 Cortina Uprights with Discs & Calipers...... £25.00
(the discs were like new)

And,

10/11/01 Complete Sierra Rear Axle & Suspension (with a Jag prop thrown in).... £45.00

Another was,

24/11/01 Lotus 907 Engine with Matching Dellorto 45's & Manifold (no alt or starter motor).... £60.00

One more that caught my eye was,

11/12/01 48m of 25 x 25 x 1.5 Box Section 304 s/s.... £128.00

Even then building for £250 was out of the question.

Cheers,
Paul G

There's hope for me yet.

spiderman01980 - 25/4/11 at 05:34 PM

i picked my chassis on 28th of march 2009, took a little break due to long hours at work but its nearly done, my wedding is next month so soon as that is out of the way iv only got to sort out the radiator carbs and the oil leak on the bike reverse boxe, all electrics and breakes work, i was also towed to longlife to get the exhaust done 3 miles down the road, iv had my ups and downs but when i take a good look at it i think i did well considering its my 1st build!

blakep82 - 25/4/11 at 06:13 PM

bought my chassis in 2003 while i still lived in london, and never actually started to build properly til 2006 i think, so this thread makes me feel a bit happier now
i don't think 5 years is too bad, given i've been in and out of work. just need a decent job to get it finished and on the road now...

zilspeed - 25/4/11 at 08:34 PM

All I'll say is.

Circumstances don't exactly allow much to happen in that department right now.
I guess that's why I'm pleased to be able to help others out with their projects in any way I can.

I'm told that patience is a virtue.

Liam - 26/4/11 at 12:57 AM

WOW!! I'm not the longest build!!

Comming up for 10 years now since I started after graduating from uni. Was going reasonably but things like courtship => marriage => house renovation => and now new job in london with the car back here in bedford certainly get in the way of projects like this! And all I need to do is the final assembly then get the engine running and lectrics done. So near yet probably so far as I wont be able to finish until we get a place down near the new job, and house prices in Epsom are a liiiiiitle bit high if I want a nice garage . One day, I tell you - one day!! Has to be done before children or I'm stuffed for 18 years or so!!

DRC INDY 7 - 26/4/11 at 06:53 AM

I thought mine was too long at 18 months

It also took me 6 months to swap the engine gearbox and wiring but well worth it

spiderman - 24/12/12 at 08:39 PM

Just thought I would resurrect this thread as I still have not finished. was hoping for some decent over the Xmas break to get it pretty much complete but does not look like that will be happening. Need to finish so that I can start the restoration of my GT6 MK2 and my New toy a 1968 MK1 Triumph 2000 which has been in storage since 1973.

big_wasa - 24/12/12 at 08:46 PM

Not done much to mine either but, this time next year

Same here........

Merry christmas anyway!!!

Stott - 24/12/12 at 09:12 PM

Just to add to this, I picked mine up in 1997 and it was reg'd just over a week ago so that was a while.......

MikeR - 25/12/12 at 08:07 AM

I have built a table over the car so I can store things above it. not touched the car and hardly been in the garage due to some magic turning one child into two.

INDY BIRD - 25/12/12 at 08:26 AM

Come on guys pull your fingers out I built an Indy in 4 months just Eve's and every other weekend,

So whats the quickest time aswell?

I recon could do in 2 weeks easily

Have a great christmas all and as the weathers crap and excuse to get in the garage I think

spiderman - 20/11/14 at 04:26 AM

15yrs and counting.

coozer - 20/11/14 at 06:25 AM

Been on with the Jago for 5 years so far and all I've got so far is a painted chassis, a brand new body and the v8 is in bits.....

killerferret666 - 20/11/14 at 08:07 AM

I dont know how you guys can keep the build going that long, I think id of moved on and forgot all about it and not want to go back to it!

steve m - 20/11/14 at 01:56 PM

What do you determine as finished ?
as i started im may 1997, on the road may 1999,and done around 18k since
yet i still spend 20+ hours a week in the man cave fiddling with car related stuff to make it better ? (poss worse)

steve

907 - 20/11/14 at 03:42 PM

No mate. Mine was the second edition, on parchment.

I did try to find when I actually started. Came across an old invoice ( I use the term loosely ) from
PFP Salvage for " pair of Cortina hubs with discs & callipers £25 " and dated 27-10-01

Cheers

Mr Whippy - 21/11/14 at 12:43 PM

I would be interested to see what people put as the root cause of their long builds

Personally I had a habit of working very long hours late at night but that rapidly got too much so tended move onto other projects

I now do vastly better just working 1-2 hours on specific single tasks each night and then coming back inside, even at weekends. If I do that I tear though the car and feel a lot better about what I've done as I've finish what I set out to do

well I'm now at 9 years
but in all that time I just can't seem to get near the thing

to start with the issue was I hadn't finished converting the garage before I got the kit...
then I ran out of cash due to buying a house
then I ran out of time due to working stupid hours (30+ hours of unpaid overtime a week )
then the old garage roof caved in in the snow - so new garage from scratch needed
then I ran out of time again due to the new GF
shortly followed by broken bones and sorting the house properly for said GF to move in
then I really ran out if time when we had our little girl who at 8 months old takes every bit of spare time I've got left...

oh and every time it looks like I might get a chance to work on the car - one of the tin-tops needs fixed

James - 21/11/14 at 05:43 PM

Mine took 4 years. Was on the road in 2006, felt slow but some of these tales make that seem fast!

For those of you who're annoyed its taking so long: do you watch TV? I find that such a massive time-Sapper. If, instead of watching Corrie you spent the same 30 mins on the car could you make more progress?

SCAR - 21/11/14 at 06:53 PM

Bought my Sylva Phoenix kit in 1998 and haven't started it yet!
The body is in storage, the chassis is sat on top of an XJS (another project) in the garage and the SORN mk2 escort is in bits in the garage loft. Still intend to build it to a very basic spec. Ali panelled interior, minimum instruments, live axle and tuned 1660 crossflow...........yummy

MikeR - 21/11/14 at 10:32 PM

Lack of knowledge / experience slowed me down.
Lack of space hampered progress.
Chasing girls really slowed me down
Two children put a stop to everything for 4 years.
Buying a new house with double garage - hoping to move by Xmas and have rolling car in 12 months

15 years + after starting.........

I've had some cracking girlfriends & have two amazing kids so not completely wasted time

spiderman - 13/2/19 at 03:07 AM

Still not finished, must put some effort into getting it finished before I am.

MikeR - 13/2/19 at 08:31 AM

Me neither

I met a guy last summer who had a Caterham he'd built from a kit. Took him 3 days to build it apparently!!!

I started mine just after I got married in May 2012 - still going now but hope to get it completed in 2019

Yeah for all the cost of the Caterham kits, it's worth just shoving it on a loan, building it in a few weeks, enjoying it and paying it off at the same time.
