magnets

Guys,

I want to make custom sized magnetic knife rack to fit a particular sized space on the kitchen wall, I have just bought some flexible self adheisive magnetic strip on Ebay for £1.30! upon reflection I don't think it is going to be up to the job.

Ideally i could do with some hard traditional magnets but they would need to be long skinny ones that I could recess into a bit of timber.

I have visions of 6mm x 6mm x 150mm or longer that I could recess into a 4mm deep rebate.

Does anyone know if magnets are available in this form?

ideally i would like to recess the BACK of the timber and put some really strong magnets in the piece of timber and then the knives would appear to be stuck just to the timber, I could take the back out of the timber with my router leaving say 1mm of timber between the magnet and the knife, I think that would be pretty smart!

Do you think that is Doable?

Thanks
Colin

I bought some rare earth magnets from RS components. They were little 3/8" dia things but could move paperclips through a 40mm desktop!

Old hard drives are a source of really strong magnets, you would probably need one per knife and there are two in each drive.

IKEA do a very cheap magnetic rack which can be cut down if required.

This. I've bought a number of these for use in the kitchen and the garage - they are silly strong magnets, and you can cut down the stainless steel rack if needed, or unstick the individual magnets from it (they're glued down on the back).

About £8 IIRC for a 50cm long rack.

Thanks for the help as always
