Am I right in thinking that the ports on the injection pinto head are the same profile as the standard round port, but with the top section 'ovalised' to accomodate the injector?

So a manifold made to suit a standard round pinto port would work fine on the injection head?

I am just in the process of doing just that.

There ain't a lot of meat at the top of the manifold though.
So I'm thinking of making up a sandwich plate to help cover up the oval tops

I wouldn't bother making a plate myself,i have had a standard manifold on five injection heads,with no problems at all.

Use a cheap pattern gasket, they tend to to have more surplus material which helps to seal it up.
