I have an Escort live rear axle, and I would like to drain the oil. Trouble is, there's no drain plug!

Now, I don't want to take the axle out and turn it over, so is there an easier way?

I was wondering about pushing a bit of plastic tube down and pumping it out...

I asked this a while back, and basically you can't. I didn't need to drain mine as it is pretty good at doin it itself - need to fix that within the next week or so.

Using a syringe would be the way I'd go about or or just not worry about it & top it up.

Just loosen the diff bolts and give it a rattle the oil will come out past the gasket, quicker if it is warm! Without dropping the diff out you can't clear any sludge that may be sitting in the bottom of the case, refilling can stir this crap up, not always a good idea:-)

On a hijack here mine ahs the same problem of it depsoiting its oil at a reasonably steady rate from the rear diff - i guess a seal needs replacing - anyone give me some pointers having never touched the rear diff?

Undo some bolts, take somthing off, replace seal, do bolts up. Job done. Well you asked for advice.

Just out of interest how critical is it? can i just top it up and leave it dripping for now?

forte do quite a good seal restore goo that u add to the oil and it softens the seals up, as long as its not too cracked up i have had some good results, works on valve stem seals etc too

Buy one of these from the chandlers. Works a treat for draining gearboxes and diffs.

i bought a casket for my axle ages ago, but never bothered changing it. Much easier to top it up instead. I'll change it when i get it in for the winter.

Chandlers, as in boat/yacht shops?

yup, boat place, I think it is called a sump pump or maybe an oil change pump. Got mine from my local boating place (next to canal) for £9
