Lap 2 at Bruntingthorpe today bang, clatter, clatter, clutch in kill switch switched...... the result:
Dead XE
Anyone got a spare XE engine?
That knock sensor wont be much use anymore...
Oh dear.
OUCH!!

think positive man - get some perspex and some silicone sealant, slap in place, et voila!
No more having to use dirty old dip sticks, just lift bonnet and look to see where the oil level is.
could also be used as a teaching aid for young mechanics...
At least it's a bit lighter now. How about a bit of JB Weld?
On a more serious note - Been there, done that. You have my sympathy!
oh dear looks like you have an oil leak
i did that to my engine when i turned the boost up a few months ago lol
Ah - that was you!
I was struggling with a broken gearstick when you came back to the pits. Bloody thing came off in my hand!!
Matt was a top bloke and fabricated me a new linkage in the workshop. Only missed an hour.
Sorry to hear your probs. A Griff blew up on the back section later in the afternoon and the red Clio cup car had a major blowout which I think took
some bodywork with it.
Pretty eventful run out!

I wouldn't have minded so much if it happened near the end of the day but on my second lap!!!! When I got home I took the spark plugs out
expecting to see a mangled mess but they all looked ok surprisingly. If i can get the time I'll take the head off later today.
Was also glad I had the trailer which I only bought off a mate a little while ago.
At least watching the rugby cheered me up a little when I got home.
No pressure in the crankcase now
We should really get a forum section on "escaping conrods" going.
I have a few nice piccies for that category aswell, what engine was it anyway?
grtz Thomas
It is/was a Vauxhall XE engine.
I've just come back in from taking the head off and it would appear to be ok somehow - not sure how that works but i won't complain.
I'll take the head apart to check valve aren't bent but there's no sign of contact on the valves at the piston is in one piece. I
pushed the piston out the top of the block with very light finger pressure as you would want. The con rod is in a few pieces - some of which are still
at Bruntingthorpe somewhere I think.
So I don't know if it was a rod, big end or rod bolt (arp) which went first.
have you checked to underside of the piston aswell, and the wrist pin? it could have snapped on the way down, which could be why you head is in one
piece.
strange, would suspect to rocket itself in the chamber or valves, but apperently didn't.

The little end is still intact:
Sick con rod
