1st Build - What Do I Need

I'll be starting my first build 1st July, however am trying to learn and plan as much as possible (thus posting across the whole board ) prior to this as I will only have 6-7 weeks to complete the full build.

I would like to buy some of the kit from ebay and other retailers who will be cheaper than Luego and offer more choice, however at the same time, this being my first ever build with a huge learning curve, I don't wish to create myself more trouble in buying incorrect items that don't fit .

My max budget is £4k, what else, other than the packages below and a donor vehicle will I also HAVE to purchase? Nuts, bolts, rivets, glues, etc.

What I think must be purchased from Luego:

(1) Professionally Welded Chassis
(2) Suspension/Steering
(3) Bodywork
(4) Brakes
(7) Windscreen
(9) Engine parts
(10) Miscellaneous

What I think doesn't not have to be purchased from Luego:

(5) Luxury Light Package £260 + VAT
(6) Clocks High Quality (ETB) £380 + VAT
(8) Interior £638 + VAT

Purchasing my own kit from the above packages, is it possible to easily buy something that does not fit? Lights which will not pass SVA, etc?

Can the items in package (4) and (10) be purchased cheaper elsewhere, with a low risk of buying incorrect ones?

You could save a few quid by not getting the chassis powder coated by them.
There is a bloke on e-bay who sells 13” Gaz shocks for £180 a set so that’s a few extra quid saved! It depends how far you want to go with saving money. I’m only buying the minimum from manufacturers because I’m stuck in my student ways and am confident I can fabricate/source parts cheaper!
Chassis/suspension arms, all ali panels and grp are the only bits I shall be buying. If you want to stick to the 4K budget you will need to be prepared for some major bargain hunting.

Which kit are you buying (manufacturer?). And how do you know which are the right parts to buy?

I’m making a velocity xt but most modern 7 replicas are made from the same bits, eg sierra/ escort donor so there are plenty of people out there with advice, if you are unsure about any parts just ask on this site, the chances are that someone has used it or faced the same problems!

Don’t forget the sva and registration fees in your budget!

I am thinking of this, however I don't think it will be as much 'fun' and I won't learn as much... I'll also probably get annoyed if something hasn't been fitted by the previous builder the way I wanted it to...

If you are going to Luego. Get one of there budget blaster kits and get the rest from other places. Its much cheaper.

They have a good offer on due to start in april for some very well discounted bits. I had a sneak preview yesterday when i was there and bought some bits.

Shocks you will get cheaper and i reckon a windscreen from Mangogroove on here will be cheaper too.

You will get brakes when u buy the uprights etc from somewhere alot cheaper. If you get a Velocity kit it will be made to run sierra gear which is cheap. You can by a locost kit from them to run sierra stuff too. Hell of a lot cheaper than Cortina.

Gut it and start again. That way you do it how u want and will have most of the bits for a lot less mooolah.

Only problem is, the chassis and bodywork would have already been riveted/drilled...

Luego's stuff/work and service is good but cheap it aint.

You think a kit is a steep learning curve you should try building your own with the book as a guide. Now thats steep
