Engine Choices
The Viento build is going well (pics to follow another day), if a bit slowly due to the rest of my life getting in the way.
I am a long way off getting to the engine (I have a 3.5 V8 in the back of the garage), However, I have been browsing e-bay and there seems to be quite
a lot of cheap straight 6 Jag engines around.
Looking on Wiki, these seem to have a lot of power and I was wondering why they don't seem to appear in kit cars. Presumable they will fit in
a Viento.
Just idle speculation really. By the way, I will be at Stoneleigh on the Monday at least so looking forward to seeing you all there.

Because they weigh even more than a Pinto.................. so much they come with their own gravitational field!!!
I've seen a few in D-type replicas, SS100's etc. Gonna be pretty expensive to rebuild if they need it. Better with a BWM straight six
i'd say if you want to go for 6-cyl (Speedy wont agree though )

Try and source a lexus v8 or toyota v6. should be fun but bit expensive though. Or just use your current v8 as you already have it.

Go for something main stream and cheap to rebuild and repair / replace. The jag ones are costly to rebuild, as are BMW, lexus and VAG.
Ford parts seem the cheapest, though the parts for mine are a tthe top end of the price list!! - over £200 for a gasket set etc.
ETA: The rover V8 stuff is cheaper still, caused by years of abuse in hotrods, street rods and custom cars etc. You can also get some very good
performance parts for the Rover V8.
All IMO of course.

But when the jag engine goes, you just buy a bigger one for £80

Lexus V8 is the best engine, cheap reliable.
Early v8 had six bolt mains, can produce 500hp with turbos, no internal mods.

Any V8 will have double the exhaust and manifold costs.
However, you cant beat a V8 for that lurverly burbling sound.
In hindsight, a Nice 6 pot engine is a second best to a V8.
A Nissan Skyline engine would go very well, as would the Toyota Supra (Supra has already been factory fitted by the Old Luego team)
6pot BMW has been done by Luego as well.
A M5 engine would fly in a Viento.
Still the RV8 is a nice engine, and not that heavy. I get 26mpg at a steady 70 on the motorway / main roads, and considerably less when driving it in
FUN mode
I hind sight, I would have fitted a Ford gearbox, as they are more available and certainly cheaper than a LT77 box if you can find a good one.
Just my 2d's worth.

2. Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

They are great engines for the price they appear on Ebay. There always a steady supply of donor Soarers as well for less than a £1K.
Two reasons why I went for an LS1 instead. They don't come with manuals so you need a conversion kit. They didn't provide the power I was
after in stock form without forced induction.

Are the Jag enignes a iron block? I have been lugging RV8's around for ages regarding my build and the ally blocks are heavy enough. I dread
to think how much a cast iron big block is.
I can just managed to stagger along with a RV8 Ally block. In fact I have to worthless 3.5 RV8 blocks. I am thinking of a eight way plant pot.

Thanks for the thoughts. I got the Rover V8 as part of a deal with Luego when I bought the kit and according to my research its about 165BHP
standard. I want something around 200BHP so I am leaning towards either
i) new cams and other bits for the V8, or
ii) I quite like the idea of a BMW 2.8 (192BHP unmodified) and then swapping the head for an M50 2.5 at a later date to add perhaps 10% more power.
They are not that cheap on e-bay and I know to avoid the ones with the sulphur problem. But as pointed out elsewhere I would save by not doubling up
on the exhaust system. Also, it would be different as the only other one that I know of is the Luego one.

if all you want is cheap 200bhp then 24v v6 cosworth, rev well, cheap, and now easy cheap T5 gearbox fitting thanks to the americans, what more could
u want, the 24v cosworth could easily see about 230bhp+ with BOB cams and an aftermarket ecu, or the v6 jag engine and manual box out of an S-Type
jag, basicly its an ST220 mondeo engine pushing 241bhp and set up with a manual box and rear drive.

I had a stage 1 4 cyl cosworth turbo in my Velocity which was jolly good fun until I hit a manhole cover.
And if you buy a secondhand cossie you get the gearbox, LSD, rear end, loom, etc and then you can sell all the other bits on Ebay

We are talking about a Luego Viento here, if a V10 fits.........
as for choices linky about the only one you couldn't fit would be the
'proper' boat engine and the Sabre, although the latter would be a serious challenge.
