MOT TIME

Well, Finally I have 'finished' my Luego Locost after 25 months! (ok, still a bit of IVA trims to do) but the next stage before the IVA seems to be MOT testing it.

Now, I've got two questions for you guys (gals)

one - If you do an MOT, how do they record the fact and give you a cert on an unregistered vehicle?

The second question is... how much does the car 'Drop' when it is put onto the rolling road? My ground clearance under my shortened sump is 2.75 inches

Coming soon.....Pre- IVA pics for comments / advice!

Regards, Steve.

Why do you need an MOT? Surley if they MOT'ed the car it would need one every year from now on presuming they could test an unregistered car.

I didn't MOT mine before the IVA. The IVA is a more stringent test than the MOT anyway so it should reassure you that it is roadworthy.
Good luck with the IVA

If you're using a donor engine, it makes no difference whether you MOT before or after IVA - either way, you won't get the three years of no MOT.

I'm MOTing before IVA, simply because if I've missed something obvious, it's cheaper to fail MOT than IVA. Also it's a chance to get a legal test drive in.

They will MOT you based on your VIN. According to VOSA, who I spoke to last week, you may drive to and from the MOT if you have insurance (which you can get based on the VIN).

I think if you do a pre-IVA MOT you will then be on the MOT system and need one once a year. If you don't MOT but only do the IVA you will not need an MOT for 3years as per a new car.

Rubbish, donor engine or not.. you should still get 3 years. You just have to fill in the tax exempt form that tells them its 3 years not one year.

If you MOT before then you will probably get stuck with it every year.

Plus the MOT wont help with brakes or mirrors or sharp edges. Maybe emisions if they test it right.

Pre-IVA Mot and Taxing

My midi passed its IVA two weeks ago on its second attempt.

I would say get an emissions test done to the required standard for the engine age before the IVA test. It should cost £10 to £20. Unless you are very skilled, or lucky, a car is unlikely to pass on first attempt so save most of the MOT money towards the£90 second test fee.

Regarding MOT's for years 2 and 3 read this recent posting from the WSCC site.

You can not drive the car anywhere except an IVA testing station prior to it passing/failing.

If it fails then it can be driven to a pre-booked appointment for remedial work to be undertaken.

You only need an MOT if the local DVLA insist on it. (Basically they do not know their own rules)

If you are forced to have an MOT you are NOT required to have another until the car is 3 years old.

DON'T MOT it
You will confuse the computerised system and give yourself trouble for ever.
The emissions are set at IVA, If you MOT it now you could be given the wrong emission requirements.
You don't need to do it
It makes no difference at IVA
After IVA you do not need to MOT for 3 years
DVLA local office can ask for an MOT every year but rarely do.
The requirement to MOT before IVA is an urban myth that comes up every few months and has done for many years, probably from the distant past as SVA was just starting, previous to that you could build it, MOT it, and put it on the road.
DO NOT MOT.

Thanks very much for all the advice and guidance - it looks like pretty much 100% vote to steer clear of the MOT. So...I will fill in the forms and go straight to IVA. I don't think the emissions will be too much of a problem as I'm using the original injection and ECU.....

Watch out under the IVA / Legal area for the Pre- IVA piccys - Comments / compliments / advice will be most welcome.....

Cheers to you all, Steve.

Find a quick fit or Nationwide - talk nicely to them and they'll usually let you come an use the exhaust sensor at the end of a day (that gives you CO and HCO so you'll know if you're in with a shout).
