Mazda RX8 buying
Hello All
I have been offered a 231bhp RX8 with 30,000m 56 plate by a guy I know.
I have read all the horror stories, which to be honest all cars have!, you would never buy a car if you listened to stories.
Is there anybody on here had one or got one who can give me some real life day to day opinions please.
It wouldn't be a daily driver, just a bit of Sunday fun
Thanks
Mick

All I know is my mate offered me his for about £2k because it wouldn't top 20mpg and was something like £450 a year to tax.
Didn't have any mechanical problems, mind so if you can afford the running costs and the car has a decent service history, and low miles, I
wouldn't be worried too much.

£450 tax means it was 06 or newer, you turned it down for 2k
I was stood looking at one today. They are high on my want list.
So to hijack your thread a little I have a few questions
I am not bothered about low mpg, I am not bothered by oil usage.
But lots of people say they play up when just doing a few miles ie to the shops and back ?
How will 231bhp feel against the 190bhp and torque of my current 2.5 v6 ?

if he is genuine seller then he'd be happy to go halfs on getting it compression tested at a specialist.
I looked into getting one pretty seriously a few months back - the only issue with them apart from the engine, which you are already aware of (and is
a very real problem btw) is that the interior looks v plasticy and shows its age.
There are some good forums for them, check them out.

Look at the ones for sale on E bay, there seems to be lots listed with engine problems and poor starting far more than other comparable cars
especially when there are comparatively few RX8s. I was almost tempted but after looking at the many cheap ones for sale mostly with engine problems I
decided against it.
It would be nice to do a v8 conversion on one but then not cheap.

My mate who's got one say's his Nissan is better.
He had an RX8, then a 350z when some killed the mazda.
Someone killed that nissan (Both times had his car written off parked on his driveway) and some time later he bought another nissan and Rx8, he gets
far more use out of the nissan.

It might have a more robust engine, but the RX8 is by far the better drivers car. That said there is no way I could put up with the stupid fuel
economy. If I was paying big V8 fuel costs I want big V8 performance to go with it, and the RX8 doesn't really have it.
It is true that they don't like being run for short periods; starting it up just to move it off the drive etc. will result in it flooding and
not wanting to start again.

I thought about one for a bit, then opted for a Focus ST3 - mapped to 275bhp - seriously quick, 22-25mpg though, very nice and very comfy interior
with thick heated leather Reccaro buckets and an utter joy to drive, I love it. Interior doesn't have a mark on it and it's 4 years old.
If you're not living life on the edge you're taking up too much room.

I had a 2005 231bhp one and loved it. No issues with oil however v thirsty and that was when fuel was £0.40 less a litre. Tax rules murdered the rx8
which is why they are cheap along with mpg. I would recommend one however just check history.

A work colleage of mine is selling one. He loves it, but now has a company car, so the RX has to go.
He has had it since 2006 and not had any problems with it as far as I know, but is struggling to sell it.
Just for comparison :
27,000 miles
56 plate
192ps
£3995

Great car.
Lov them just can't afford to run one :-)
