Brakes, 4 pot calipers for haynes roadster/Sierra uprights

Hi all

I'm at the stage of sorting out my caliper options for my haynes roadster using sierra uprights, I wanted a small 4 pot caliper and come across metro turbo front calipers as they come with spacers so they can be used with vented discs. I have disscoverd that the bolt holes in the caliper and upright line up to (bonus) I will have some discs soon so can check for fit and will post my findings once I have done some tinkering.......

You really want to think hard before going down this route as there is little or no advantage.

Well I for one would be interested in the outcome. Don't be put off without good reason.

The good reason is to do with the total effective hydraulic area of the callipers --- workout the area of a piston in the Metro calliper x2 then work out the are of a Sierra calliper piston .

NB The area of only 2 piston in the Metro calliper not 4 --- Newton's Law applies every force has an equal and opposite reaction.

The Metro calliper will only exert about 0.75 of the force of the Sierra calliper at the same hydraulic pressure.

4 potcaliper on sierra front upright

Hi all

Just a line to update my progress on this subject, have made some new dummy spacers to replace the ones in the calipers that are now 14.5mm thick as to the old thickness of 11mm then machined 4mm off the inside face of the mounting lugs on the caliper. It now goes over the sierra disc nicely but may have to machine 1mm to 1.5mm off the mounting lug on the sierra hub carrier, will do this tomorrow and will post my findings soon and have some pics to help.....

Ta for now....

the baby Scimitars, SS1s, late Sabres etc, came from the factory with the Metro 4 pot caliper as std, albeit the solid disc version.
Its compact and reasonably light even for an iron caliper, but the main issue is small pad area (about half a sierras) and not a huge choice of decent pad material.

on the small scimitars, pad fade is a major problem, often so pad it boils the fluid too, most go to chevette based uprights and carlton vented discs and Volvo calipers as a result, but its a heavy old setup.

don't let it stop you of course :-)
