steering rack mounts and u/j's
have just been trial fitting my steering rack and column and have come across two problems...firstly the mounting brackets I have for the rack
don't fit, they appear to be too small to actually fit over the rubbers on the rack and mate with the chassis mounting bracket, and secondly
even if they did fit, the holes don't line up with the holes on the mounting bracket.
Also, I am not particularly liking the 15+ year old rubber flexi-joint that mates the steering column to the steering rack pinion....seems a little
too stressed somehow(!?)... Has anyone had any experience with the brackets and universal joints you can get from Rally Design as viable alternatives
for both these parts and a better fit? Anyone had any problems with these? Are luego's measurements off or will a 'standard'
after-market pair of brackets fit nicely to the existing holes in my velocity chassis??
Sorry for all the questions guys but anyone with any feedback would be much appreciated..

Hi. ..not as far as i'm aware......brief history of the kit is i 'rescued' it from a garage where someone had it stored untouched
for 10+ years... chassis, body panels various sundries and donor parts and....luego velocity (but not the XT version)
The steering column i believe is from a sierra but has already been chopped and extended by luego (although not welded up yet) and this is the
original flexi joint that was on the end....think i have seen another one on here like this in another post, someone will be able to put me right
i'm sure..
Anyway, upshot is, i don't fancy using it on my car, and i was really wondering what experience other people have had of putting in a universal
joint here from somewhere like Rally Design......i believe they do them for the escort rack.....and if there's anything i need to look out
for..
Cheers

Your steering rack is similar to the Cortina rack in my Cobra - I had the same problem with the mounts so i put washers between the chassis and the
mount. Not had any problems (although obviously i will have to go & check now )

cheers robin......yes i was thinking about packing it out with washers myself but i'm more concerned with the fact that the mounting holes
don't line up and consequently the bolts won't go in straight... Could open out the holes on the chassis mounting bracket i guess but
would rather not have to..... just seems odd that the clamps are so way off!
Also....anyone have any feedback on whether its worth replacing the rubbers the clamps sit on over the rack with the poly type replacements you can
get from Rally Design?

Do yourself a favor and check for bump steer ...
You may end up changing the rack position ..

Steering rack mounts
If it helps I've got a 2005 Viento in Cambridgeshire which you can check. I can only just recall but it isn't the most direct link on the
viento either.
