welding and MK?

Hi guys,

reading one of the other posts on this site, lots of comments about having to weld when you buy the MK chassis. Is this correct? I thought the whole point of buying a pre-fabbed chassis was that all the welding was done, including mounting points etc? I'm thinking of the Indy specifically, if this makes any difference.

Also, should be getting my donor bits soon (no space to strip a car down myself), and will need to scrub and paint them. Any tips for cleaning agents, and heat-proof paints?

There is no welding to be done at all on the indy,its completely bracketed right down to the pedals.
All you need is a drill and a load of rivets plus a few tubes of sealant,oh and your donor parts.
a few small brackets have to be manufactured for nose cone and bonnet,but its not rocket science.

best stuf for cleaning is gunk,i use tfr or petrol deisel mix but it stinks,get a cheap pressure washer as well,makes it easier and you can clean the drive/garage floor after,as for the welding,there isnt any to do.

carefull with the gunk specially on cast alloy like the diff...spray it on and wash it off quick.....itl look like a brand new diff

No welding .. BUT on mine I used MIG welding to:
Shorten the sump on a 2.0I Pinto (didn't know about granada short sumps!)
Fabricate seat support brackets (don't like wobbly seats)
Fabricate headlamp mounts
Fabricate radiator mounts
Fabricate smaller higher up Mitsubishi alternator support bracket
Technically adjust EFI (ali)
Modify EFI fuel rail
Add fuel tank vent support bracket to petrol tank straps
Fabricate exhaust

Rest done using M4 taptites, RivNuts, rivets & Sikaflex..etc.

Some of above may not be applicable to your particular build, but in the total scale of getting an MK Indy on the road the cost of a MIG is trivial and in my opinion the Indy is a quality chassis starting point that buys you months of road time that is well worth the money.

This time last year I didn't even know that I wanted to build or drive a 7ish car, a ride in Martin's Blade changed all that. Now its on the road, I wouldn't be without it.

Don't be put off by a bit of effort ... its worth doing.

Hmmm,

I went to a breaker that specialises in Granadas (doesn't do much else) and when I mentioned the short sump he said I was talking out of my arse and he had never seen one. ????????

As far as cleaning donor parts are concerned some one on this list recommended parrafin. Worked a treat.

Found a link on the build tips at the robinhood site,a bloke on there will chop and weld sump plus shorten pickup for 50 quid +p/p.

The guy who chops sumps to the above can be found in the for sale section on the same site posted 19 august.
