Custom Length Alternator Belt
Where from? Need a non-standard length belt for my Zetec installation.

Was in there today....a chocolate T Cosy would be far more useful than the idiot in their "parts" dept.
Gave up trying to get any sense out of him and bought 3 of their "standard" belts, none of which fitted and I've got to take back
tomorrow.

Look in your yellow pages for an industrial transmission and bearing supplier, they will be able to supply one to suit and will have experience of
measuring etc.

Fenner belts are made in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk AFAIK

Hi,
Try a local motor factor.
I assume you are after a poly V type belt, if so the part no. will be for instance 6 PK 860, where 6 is the number of ribs and 860 the length in
millimetres.

Ta. I'll try Camberley Autofactors tomorrow. May need to try 2 or 3 to make sure I get the right length

Ill second the Halfords suggestion.
I have been there a few times with non-standard installations and just rummaged through the fanbelt display looking for the right length.
They operate (or used to anyway) a similar part number system as described above for the belt length.
My local factors got all upset at having to actually do some work to find a belt rather than look it up in a book, so I just did the searching myself
in Halfords.

All I can say is that you Scots must have better stores then us Southerners...the only belts they had of the right width were 1463mm (hb1463g) and
1650mm (hb1650g) - a big jump. There was a narrower one at 1520mm (hb1520e) (still too big) but that was the grand total of belts in the store of
approximately the right length.
From the book it looked like they could get FAI belts of varying sizes but nothing in stock and guy behind counter was missing a few spare parts in
the customer service department.

mac lives a small blat from a supersized halfrauds........... that well known pedalbike shop that sell some car stuff as well. The laugh is you go
to partco to by the same stuff.

remember this from a while ago, some mentioned
"Falcon Automotive belt part code 6FR870 (870mm length)"
not sure what supplier but maybe worth a google. presume it also comes in different lengths.

That's where I got mine from- but then I was after a 'v'pulley so maybe that's easier to find.
Having failed with the string route (it goes too far into the groove ) I just cut the Sierra belt down to the right length then opened it up and
measured it. Bought an FAI one to match.

Thanks James - I've a small branch less than 5 minutes from home and 10 from Work. Popped in there today. Closest sizes they do are 1488 and
1513. 1488 too small and 1513 a fraction too large.
Think I may need to change my design a little. Going to have a rummage around the escort / mondeo bits in my garage in a bit.
Think I may be able to make the 1513 fit without too many issues.

My wife drives for a local parts supplier on Saturdays and sometimes delivers to Halfords  . Always seems odd for a nationwide firm.

Why not use a belt that's slightly too large with a tensioner? It can't be hard to build a small wheel on a bearing on a dprung arm? ( I
think the Mondeo v6 may have an arm you could rob)???

Do you have no adjustability/tensioner on the alternator anyway? That 26mm difference between those two belts I'd have thought would be within
the range of the alternator pivoting on it's mount.
Or are you in danger of it hitting the 'Y' rails?

Just wrap masking tape around the pulleys as the belt would run, cut it off and measure it
If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation
