Post Pre-SVA checkup

Just got back from my pre-SVA checkup at the friendly local garage.

A few bolts aren't tight enough, the brake flexia need tidying up but apart from that general build was good.

The issues I have are according their machine the emissions were WAY high... I am assuming that would be down to the fact the engine hasn't been setup/tuned yet and is running on the wrong jets.

And, after driving round the block the brakes seem VERY lacking. I know I normally drive a modern car with servo assisted brakes but these were worse than I was expecting...

Is anyone else out there running a Viento with standard Sierra single pot callipers and 260mm disks? Can anyone off any advice on what I should do?

Hi
I am running standard sizes xr4x4 discs front and rear on my Viento and when i initially drove before my SVA I also thought they were crap!!
But since sva and with a few hundred miles done they are actually quite good, I have wilwood mast cylinders .625 on the front and .7" on the rear set up and with a bias bar set up (bar set to max front)
I pinned mine before SVA and all my results were perfect. Am running with a heavy engine aswell Ford2.8 V6, BUT i can still lock the front end easily under heavy braking.
They will wear in so dont worry!

have just seen the car and it puts mine to shame, its a very nice build.

not much to sort for sva either

Same set up as you and same reaction at first - Bear in mind you are comparing modern servo assisted bits put together in a factory with bare mechanicals as a hodge potch - Once they bed in and on a good run, when you get heat in them they will do you proud - Just feels that you have to push hard...

Thanks guys, that sets my mind at ease. I'll leave the brakes I have on there.

Fingers crossed setting the engine up next week will sort my emission problems!

if you are not happy with your very very heavy sierra single pot calipers, then why not but some 4 pot hispec's or wilwoods, that are better and much lighter, my hispecs are about 900g's a caliper!





I love Pinto's, even if i did get mine from P&O!

the front brakes are of a car 2-3 x the wieght of yours so should stop it on the button.

it's hard to tell how bad they are from your description but try bleeding again, two person bleed is best - someone presses pedal, other plays with the nipple.

I am not sure how far you need to drive to bed brakes in but with new pads and new disc or vern old disc I wouldn't have though it'll be more than a few 100 m.

When I drowe to my 1st SVA the brakes were dire, I tested them on local roads few 100 m from car, driving with left foot on brakes - I beld them twice and still bad. I then put braided hoses on, bled again and rock solid. May be there was air in the system or something else.

If you press on the pedal, it should feel a bit soft then move a cm or so then be vey hard.

I had the 260 single cylinders on the front and they didn't give me any feel at all after they had bedded in. So I made some two pot cosworth calipers fit on the front. The difference is outstanding. Much firmer pedal and not a ridiculous cost after remanufacturing. For the emmissions if your engine is old then you will fall into the same area of testing as mine which is a visual test.

Hi Chris

My brakes appear to be sorted now, it seems it was down to my bias bar being put togther totally wrong. Now it is sorted I can easily lock the front brakes on tarmac (if I need bigger brakes will be decided once I drive it on the road )

Emissions - The engine is going in Moday to be setup. Only done by eye/ear by a mechanical numpty so far (that's me by the way ). The engine was produced in Jan 93 (I understood it was older when I bought it but LandRover say it is Jan 93). Hoping it isn't listed in the MOT manual then it will be visual inspection else I am screwed...

As I understand it YOU need to prove the age of the engine for SVA else they stick current emissions regs. At least 1993 is pre CAT.

Well I bought Chris's 260mm (Sierra 4x4) calipers, and they will lock the front wheels at most speeds if I hit the brakes hard enough.
No problems at all, and miles better than the 240mm sierra discs I had before.

I do agree with Chris, you need decent brakes up front.
I used to get an uneasy feeling when braking hard at speed with the 240mm's, and that does not happen with the 260mm ones.

I'm going to Newark, and up the A1 on Friday Afternoon. Happy to meet up with anyone for a "convoy"

Perhaps this part of the thread would be better undet the Events section.
