Knocking/rubbing noise on hard cornering
Hi All,
You will all be please to know that the engine is back in with a new clutch (WOW, what a difference!) and everything is peachy.
My attenention is now drawn to a knocking/rubbing noise I get under hard cornering to the left... It sounds to me like it is coming from the back and
SWMBO (and knows everything about everything ) insists it is from the tunnel. Has anyone had similar or have any hints? I am guessing propshaft
clipping but someone on here might have experianced the same problem...
I am planning on getting it over to my friendly local tyre fitters to see if I can stick it on their ramps to get a good look, but that is
work/weather permitting.
Thanks in advance!
Mark

Have a look for anything in the engine bay clipping.. its decieveing where noises come from.
We swore blind our knocking was from the back... even changed the driveshafts etc... Turned out to be the fan on the alternator catching on a chassis
rail!.
Also double check none of the Engine mounts have slackened themselfes off, or mounting bolts vibrated loose, ours had at one point.. posibly at the
same time as above.
(I would have thought it'd be as easy to look from above through the tunnel top etc than from below.. isisn't it sealed by the floor.)

I had problems with the driveshaft trying to machine its way through the tunnel once I put slicks on - only right handers.

Check the bolts that hold the outer cv joint onto the rear drive shafts are not catching the underneath of the upper wishbone on one side of the rear
end. Has been a problem on some vientos..

Sounds like the end of the gearbox hitting the frame. I had this prob a little on both my cars. Theres not much room in those tunnels. I was going to
put a pad between the g.box and frame but never got round to it.

I had the same problem on my Striker hard cornering with a passenger.
The axle would move against the bushes enough for the diff flange to rub on the inside of the tunnel.
That was a live axle however so not sure if it applies to an independent back end

DITTO The above, I notice extactly the same type of knocking on mine yesterday, examining on return found ALL of the bolts holding the drive shaft on
had worked loose due to them catching on the underside of the upper left wishbone. Could have been interesting if had come off all together.
Solution is to flatten off the botton of the wishbones on both sides when I get chance.

Was thinking of changing the rear springs on mine to a harder value to try and avoid this. I think the springs supplied by the original luego may be a
little soft or short.

I have a suspicion that the rear shocks/springs are a little short... The car just seem too low on the back....
I will try putting some tape on the wishbones and seeing if it gets rubbed of when I go for a spin. THat will answer whether it is that.

Put 300lbs on the rear and wound them up (there's no way that I'll ever get it as low as 4.5" at the rear) - Haven't had any
noise since then and the ride is much better - The original 175s supplied were crushed almost flat (but I do need to diet)

Hi Neil, that is a very good point....
What dampers/springs *SHOULD* I have on the Viento?
The ones I have were purchased by the previous builder and I assumed they were correct (nothing else was so why would they be??)
What I have are Gaz shocks and springs from Dampertech
130/090 B12
1.9 x 9 x 200
140/095/ B12
1.9 x 9 x 325
If that means anything to anyone 'cos it sure as hell means nothing to me!

Neil, you are a genious
Raised the rear ride height by 5 turns (getting very hard to turun the spanner at that point) and not heard the noise since! I did put tape on the
upper wishbones but not checked it yet (but no noise = no rubbing so pointless to check! )
