plugs and a oil change. ive checked the turbo and it all seems fine. but ive not got a clue what could be wrong with it. some times on tick over it
seems as tho its got a misfire but only a bit.

what age is it? My sprinter goes into safe mode at times due to loss of boost, similar to how you describe.

Is it a variable vane turbo? Sometimes the vane actuator arm can jam intermitently..... Would be interesting to temporarily attach a boost gauge and
see what is happening....

Defniately something wrong then, the 1.8TD engine emits more power in sound energy than it sends through the crankshaft!
I would check for a sticking wastegate actuator, and for a sticking/faulty EGR valve (quite common as they get caked up with crud). You will probably
find the entire induction system 'upwind' of the EGR valve is filled with something resembling black dairylea cheese due to the exhaust
gasses, a lot of people bypass them.

Ive seen this problem with a golf, not sure if it the same on an escort but it was the MAF sensor. The tube like device going into the air filter.
Unplug the wires going to it and see if it feels like your symptoms?
