Sourcing a zetec or duratec

Where would you suggest I start looking for a 2l zetec or duratec engine with some chance of it running ok. I'm reluctant to buy an engine from any old scrapyard unless I can see it running. Where are the reputable resellers?
How much do they go for? (ballpark)

If you're going for a Zetec I'd love to see one built with a 1.7 Zetec S which I seem to remember that lot selling. Friend of mine has one in a Puma and with the variable valve timing it goes like stink. It is completely different to the 'normal' Zetecs fitted in Escorts/Orions/Mondeos.

I'd look round the local salvage yards try and find a write off with a rear end shunt should be able to see the car running before you buy and if its a few year old and depending on damage you probably be able to pick one up for £200-£300.

Do zetecs fit in the locost chassis well with little modification?

Just asking cos I got to find something better than th 1.8 cvh in my sierra

We paid about £150 for a 1.8 zetec from Andy Hewing (who also posts on here occasionally). We were originally going to put it in our standard Luego chassis.

You will need to do some work on the standard unit as the sump will need shortening and baffling (depending on what it comes from). The water pump will also need to be changed (again check where it came from as this might not need to be done).

We had trouble squeezing it in the standard chassis, as we would have had to have engine mounts made and this was going to be hassle. Unless you are going to use the standard injection then you should go for an older engine and run it on carbs, as throttle bodies are expensive unless you make them yourself (post 97 engines won't get through emmissions on carbs apparently).

It might be worth talking to Dunnells. They know what they are talking about about and can give you an idea of the sort of things you need to do to put one in a seven.

We decided it was too much hassle/too expensive and went bike power instead.
