recommend me BEC electrician in Scotland?
paublo999 - 10/11/08 at 11:50 AM

hi all,

As per title, struggling with an ecu fault of some sort on mr ZZR1400 and would like some help in diagnosing why it wont play... rev limit coming in too early/safe mode related and I dont have the original clocks to get the error number..

Cheers
Paul.

Mr Whippy - 10/11/08 at 12:03 PM

surely just a bike garage could deal with this

paublo999 - 10/11/08 at 12:47 PM

Dealers are not interested in anything but selling whole bikes.. independants are happy to chat but would rather have four bikes in the same space a car can take up...

the other issue is that I am not using the stock clocks and cant give them an error number...

Happy to pay... seems to be much more services of this nature the further south you go...

Paul.

Have you tried contacting Jeff? He used to run the Kawa dealer in Newcastle, and had loads of trouble with his ZZR1400.

Not sure how you'd get in touch with him though?

Mike

its the same car... he did have loads of problems and one remains. Will chat to him this week as he is making me a new can for the car.

I have sourced a workshop manual but really need someone with a diagnostics unit to find out where the problem is in the loom.

Paul

You might want to try a USA ECU (no immobiliser)
one on e-bay link
This is the same unit we use on the Radical.

Hi again Paul,
Just had a thought.
As you are not using the clocks, have you connected a separate +12V feed to the speed sensor?

The speed sensor normally uses a feed via the clocks, if they are not connected then the sensor will not get power.

On the Radical, I connected a +12V feed to the pink wire going to pin 11 of the clock (meter unit) loom connector.
I used a link from pin 9 (BR/W) which is an ign +12v.
Doug.

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the suggestion, just trying to make sense of the service manaual. As for the connections, I didnt wire the car and just look at the loom as miles of black tape...

Will concentrate on this section and see if I can find the plug and where it goes to to on the loom...

out of my depth on this one to be honest...

will get there..

dan__wright - 10/11/08 at 02:18 PM

i had this exact problem on a zx10r.

ignition on and pump primes, throttle bodies open and exhaust valve does a test but it wouldn't spark.

went through all the wiring and found it was the side stand / clutch / neutral switch circuit, where i had cut the relay / diode box out i had missed one of the wires and it wouldn't spark.

check those switches and hopefully you should get spark.

the annoying part is that i do have the original clocks but it didnt show any faults!

paublo999 - 10/11/08 at 02:25 PM

sorry... Jeff fixed that problem. Wont tell me what he did.

The car is running and going really well but the rev limiter cuts in at 9800rpm. Dont have the clocks so didnt know there was an error until the car was dyno'd, is it was stll being run in. It is generating full power at 161bhp at the rear wheels but wont 11k - cuts at 9800.

Cheers
Paul.

PAUL FISHER - 10/11/08 at 02:56 PM

Just a thought, its not a USA spec ecu is it,I just wonder if its restricted to 160bhp,I do no the zx10R's have different power outputs for certain markets, they do this by restricting the rev limit.

paublo999 - 10/11/08 at 03:01 PM

Malc from Yorkshire confirmed the ECU is a UK spec unit and should be fine. He was also aware of Jeff's issues..

161bhp at the rear wheels is about right - 190+ at the crank for this engine in a car... direct from a dynojet dyno..

PAUL FISHER - 10/11/08 at 04:05 PM

You can check if the ecu is a US spec they have a different code on them,I don't no what the code is,but you will find it in the workshop manual,I do no Yorkshire engines source some of there engines from the states,so it may be worth checking.

Just to add the zx10r's 2006 onwards have 3 different ecu's,they are rated at about 115bhp/145bhp/180bhp,depending which market they were sold in.

paublo999 - 10/11/08 at 04:55 PM

Hi,

Mine is a 21175-0090 6908 which according to the manual makes it Austrialin. Malc kindly pointed out that the manual is incorrect and he has had a number of Uk bikes with this code and they are legit.

Malc was on the case chasing down info for me but he is a busy man.

Just read through this post again Paul, you say the rev limiter cuts in at 9800rpm,and won't go to 11000rpm,but should it go to 11000rpm,looking through the zx14 spec,it says the engine producers 190bhp at 9500rpm,so even if you did get it to rev higher it would not be producing any more power after this point anyway, and it sounds about right that the limiter cuts in at 300rpm after max power,so your dyno figure of 160bhp at the wheels for a 190bhp flywheel engine again sounds about right?

cheers wadders, I posted on a similar forum and the bikers are used to the luxury of the standard clocks. I will have a browse and see if there are any similar symptoms posted.

The yellow pages didn't offer any solutions to finding sparkies in Scotland either..

anyone used anyone in Scotland..

Paul

edit - completely mesmerized by Wadders avatar.... how do I get me one of them...?

PAUL FISHER - 10/11/08 at 10:53 PM

Specifications may vary to meet individual markets.

paublo999 - 10/11/08 at 11:02 PM

when it was mapped after the SVA - peak power was a 9500/9600 at about 161bhp at the rear wheels... so that would be about right...

When driving the it feels ok, but should rev on bit further before the limiter.. it feels like it is protecting itself... which it is...

What to do about it... appreciate all the support - as usual...

Paul

mackei23b - 14/11/08 at 04:59 PM

Don't know if it has one of the ECUs that restrict the revs if they think the bike is in nuetral to prevent over reving?

paublo999 - 14/11/08 at 05:05 PM

Hyabusa's definately have that "feature".. we are not sure about the ZZR. Have a couple of leads on local people which I plan to follow up this weekend.

If I find out anything I will definately post..

moochofun - 18/11/08 at 05:47 AM
