bonnet lifting

hi chaps, any ideas on how to make sure that your bonnet dont fly off when you hit a tonne????? mine changed shape when we were giving it some (on a private road) and the bonnet went a kind of oval shape and apeared to be trying to lift off the car any help???

Right at the front of the bonnet in the middle ?

Gaffa / tank / race tape.

A dzus fastener right in the middle.

Form a lightweight strenghtening rib on the underside of the bonnet.

I would imagine that the problem was a rather large mass of fast air going into the nose, so.... why don't you blank it up. Got a starnge feeling that may cause other problems though

The overcentre catches I used have a hole in them so you can put an 'R' clip through. You could put a brace under the bonnet that ledges under the rear lip of the nosecone.

How about some vents in bonnet to relieve pressure ??

I had my bonnet pop off, it was gone before I could touch the brake pedal, let alone get stopped.

I replaced the rubber 'SVA' catches with stainless steel spring catches, added a wee clip arrangement (sikaflexed on) that goes under the top of the nose cone, and added 3 small air vents on each side of the bonnet, near the back.

It's been OK since then *touch wood*, and I've been up past the ton a fair bit. At Kirkistown, your honour, honest!

cheers for the tips lads, ill try the bonnet vents and might just change the sva freindly catches as i dont trust the way they dont lock with a nice snap.

Funnily enough this is a bit topic at the moment because of the 750MC's new race regs banning bonnet louvres for next season. The initial thinking was that it would be for aerodynamic reasons but it's turned out to be about hot & flammable liquids escaping the engine bay and getting in your face. Nice.

Bonnet lifting like this shouldn't be a problem unless you've got a flat floor to your engine bay - is that true for this case?

Hi Rob,

Where are the new regs?

Chris

The regs were on the new www.750mc.co.uk website (not the old motorsnippets page) but they've been removed. It seems as though they've caused such a lot of fuss that they've taken them offline until things get sorted.

Worryingly our formula rep had been present at all the official meetings to discuss the new regs but was as surprised as anyone else to see some of the changes. A bit more transparency from the 750MC would be nice.
