Still suffering from oil problems. I rebuilt the bottom end of the engine ,refitted the sump and oil pump and replaced the oil gauge. I now have NO oil going through the engine. I ran it for around 30 secs(after turning it over for a good minute on the starter) and the light wouldnt go out and the engine sounded rough. When I unscrewed the oil filter it was DRY! What have I done? As previously discussed I run a Mocal pump and cooler ,oil light and gauge. Any help would be welcomed as I am pulling my hair out. Will probably buy and fit a standard pump to eliminate that as a possibility
fill pump with vasoline (petroleum jelly ) if you can and try again oil will break down the vasoline causing no damage this was alway.s reccomeded to me when rebuilding land rover v8's never had oil starvation problem's doing it this way
Oil pressure relief valve in upside down!
Whoops..........
Those new bearings should be nicely run in though! Hopefully it will keep pressure when it gets hot at Brands on Friday. BTW for future reference check the catch tank - if its filling then this could be the problem.
Chris, when refilling the engine with fresh oil Vulcan suggest turning it over with plugs remove to get pressure up. Have you got a remote oil filter unit fitted? I found at Mallory, my first race the engine ran very hot towards the end, it was suggested it being very new and tight and unfortunaty I didn`t get time to check fellow competitors cars to see who had
Hi Ernie,
Looking forward to Brands? I am doing the Friday test as well so hopefully should be in the groove.
I did turn over the engine without ignition for over a minute to give it a chance to fill the filter (which is on the pump - Mocal). It has to have
quite a small filter from a renault five because of clearance.
Am still getting the oil light on when the water temp is between 90 and 100 but I am more and more convinced that this is due to the switch being over
rated. Yesterday on my external gauge I was showing over 100 psi at times (due to preloading the relief valve) . This is too much i think, as the oil
is now spitting out the breather . We will remove the preloading and see where that leaves us. I have no experience of the end of a race temperature -
hopefully Saturday. I will be at BH Friday from about 8ish, driving a Citroen CX (!) - the Locost is Black number 38

Chris,
I don't know where the pump is on your engine, but priming is a big thing on the R V8, and for that I filled both pipes to the remote filter with
oil.
Worked a treat!
