How do I tell an Escort GT gearbox from a standard one?

Does the GT have the bellhousing intergral the same as the standard ones?

Thanks,
Nev

I'm no expert, but the way i tell them apart is the tail-case. The GT box has a single-piece ally tailcase with more structure (reinforcing webs etc) around the steel tube for the gear lever linkage and just generally looks 'beefier' than the standard box in that area.

Both have integral bellhousings.

Hi as rob says but also be aware that some people have fitted the gt tail housing to std boxes for more reliabitity.

So the only real way is to check the ratios out manually pita but worth doing to make shure youre not buying a std box for inflated gt prices or wondering why you dont seem to be changing gear at the same time as others with a geuine gt box.

Hi

To check its a GT box:

Select first gear, and turn the output shaft 3 times.

If its a GT box the input shaft will turn 10 times, and a normal box will turn 11 times.

I was told this a couple of years ago, and it allowed me to identify the box I had sitting in the corner of my garage as a GT, (which also had the 'beefier' tailshaft) so it worked for me.
