I need to move it sideways a little so I may need an extra joint in the shaft. I appreciate it needs to e supported or it will flop about but is it
safe to have a few?

As long as the joints are good quality and there is little play as the more joints the play is multiplied.
Ive seen a car on here with 3 joints when this was asked a few months back.
I drove back to back westfields with 2 joint and 4 joints and there was a big difference. The 4 jointer quite heavy but usable the 2 jointer was like
butter.
Obviously can't comment on the quality of the joints, also there were other variables which will have contributed too.
I would buy some joints from a scrap yard probably. The shaft in there is triangular. Any idea what it might be off. Old ford? The car was based on a mk2 escort.
I've got 3 joints (i think) and an anti roll bar holding the shaft in place (seemed like a good idea as its designed to handle turning and fitted perfectly.
I was going to use a bearing and make a ring to weld on somewhere that will hold it. I there a maximum angle that the joint can be at?
Favorite way is a rose joint to suspend the bits from rather than a fixed bearing.

I currently have four UJ's and I don't like it. I'll be changing my engine configuration so I can go back to two. The problem is the play in the UJ's. At first I had the pressed steel Escort UJ's, but they don't have the actual pivot point in line with the shaft. So the shaft will wobble, which is undesired when you're trying to support it with a bearing. Then I switched to new forged Escort UJ's. But they have quite some play in them. Probably not a problem when using two (eventhough I was really suprised by the amount of play. Shouldn't have to be like that at all). Now I have switched to the heavy duty 'chrome' UJ's from CarBuilderSolutions. It is a bit better, but not by much. So all in all I wouldn't recommend it.

Ah just seen, supercharged Zetec will be interesting! I take it that the charger will be on the column side then?
After destroying my CA18DET, I am putting an SR20DET in my MK Indy as well, but my steering column is obviously on the other side, under the turbo.

The charger is on the inlet side, but since my car is on the wrong (read: left) side, it is not on the charger side. But it has to clear exhaust, alternator, waterpump, hence the 4 UJ's. (only needed 3 for routing, but I added one to keep the angle of one of the UJ's below 20 degree).
It sounds like your both going to be having fun then. RK, if you need any parts i can probably get bits from the SXOC quite easily as im a member on there. Might be worth joining if your not already just for the knowledge that on there.
I've got to say i'm curious...anyone got a pic of a steering shaft with more than 2 UJs in it? Would solve a problem I'm going to have
