My First Screen :)
johnemms - 4/5/13 at 09:34 AM

Had to wear a helmet 'all the time' anything above 20mph..
Put this on and ..wow..

Can now have a conversation with a passenger at 50+mph
Don't 'need' helmets & passenger can have a cigarette

Didn't realize just how much difference a midi screen could make!

Looks good.

What is the 'screen' height allowed before you need wipers?

evonigel - 4/5/13 at 10:48 AM

is it possible to buy something like this off the shelf to fit an mnr?
looks really good

Looks fantastic. Very nicely made. Is it your handywork?

johnemms - 4/5/13 at 11:42 AM

Made a template out of 1/2 ply
Used a router to run round the edge of the Acrylic.
Polished edges 1000 grit and some T cut
Used black number plate bolts to fix
Will put a rubber strip on the bottom later.

Very nice work. I would still wear a helmet on the road though, a stone to the face wouldn't be fun.

johnemms - 4/5/13 at 11:53 AM

I agree about the helmet & stones .. but .. I was surprised how i wanted to just tootle about..
Put the helmet on and you just want to blat!
(The top of the screen in in line with my eyes so can easily see over it - 5mm Acrylic Clear Green Edge Glass Effect)

how much did the acrylic cost you if you dont mind me asking, I made my own using perspex but it has started to have started to craze so looking at making another

johnemms - 4/5/13 at 05:00 PM

5mm 1000mm x 30cm 19.05 pp7.08 vat 5.23 £31.36
But now I know the exact size (90cm x 23cm) should be a few quid cheaper

It depends on height of seat base and angle of backrest.

In the UK, under the IVA regs, you use a 'dolly' that supposedly simulates the line of sight from a fairly short person, placed in the driver's seat. Any screen that projects above this eye line is officially a windscreen rather than a wind deflector and needs wash/wipe and demist facilities.

In practice, once IVA has been passed, I wouldn't worry too much so long as the actual driver of the car (rather than the regulatory 5th percentile midget) has a good, functional view over the top of the aeroscreen.

Do you need a screen for IVA, or can you do without?

daveb666 - 14/1/14 at 02:03 PM

No screen needed for IVA.

Presumably not good practice - but I have seen pics of people who have fitted 'full' screens post IVA without bothering with wipers at all. I assume in a downpour they'd adopt a 'hang out the side' approach to ensuring vision...? (or park up and wonder how long it'll take to bail out....)

Biggest issue I found when I was looking through my aeroscreen was mist/fog. Both sides of the screen would instantly mist over....not good if you where looking through it.
