I'm Marko and I've recently started a company to sell aftermarket Head up Displays. Here’s a couple of photographs and a quick video:

I reckon it’ll work well mounted to the scuttle of a se7en and projected onto an aeroscreen like this one:



I think it looks dead flair (especially on trackday cameras etc) but probably most interesting to you ladies and gents is that you can adjust it to read absolutely spot-on no matter which combination of engine/box/diff/tyre size you’re running. I can help make it work with pretty much any type of speedometer or sender too.


I’m after some test pilots to experiment with these using various install techniques on a se7en, and if you’re one of these and write a quick ‘How to’ with some photos I’ll discount the unit to £40 inc post (below cost) for you.


The techniques I had in mind were one driven from an OE sender, one driven from an inductive pickup, one driven from a mechanical speedo cable converted, one driven from a DIY converted mechanical speedo, and one that’s flush mounted – see here for details:

PPS - This first batch of units doesn't have 'mph' in lights so can't be used for the IVA; subsequent production has 'mph' lit up in green too and can be used as the only speedometer for the IVA test - so already-registered builds only at the moment please.

Made in Taiwan - it isn't cost effective to make these here. The gist of that line on the website is it isn't stocked in a Hong Kong bedroom, sold from a Hong Kong bedroom, (not) warranted by a kid in a Hong Kong bedroom, and (not) supported from a Hong Kong bedroom by a kid who has never seen the inside of a car before...



If its of interest/you're worried about quality, I use the same factory as Valeo (giant French automotive OEM) use, to make much the same product:

(the Type Approval people need 'proof' that you can control quality to OEM levels before they'll sign off on it, and there aren't that many factories that qualify unless they're already familiar with supplying to OEMs)

I also warrant the units - details in the instructions linked above but competition use etc is fine.

Edit - and 30 days no quibble returns. If you're less than impressed, send it back for a full refund. Haven't had a unit back yet though!



To be honest there's only really three differences between my product and the Valeo product: I cost less to feed than Valeo and their distributor network; I provide the product support that they fail to; and mine doesn't say Valeo on it.

Looks interesting. Will the reflective sticker pass an MOT or will it need to be removed?

Hello!

Nope, you're fine for MOT - it is dark, but it ia a tint, not opaque. An opaque sticker on the screen will/should fail the MOT if its more than 40 mm into the wiper swept area, but tint films are exempt from this requirement.

Construction and Use regs will nail you if you do something stupid (you can't obstruct the driver's view of the road ahead) but if you just want to overlap the bit that the wipers wipe slightly then its fine, and meets the MOT rules.

(A good old school trick from the sunstrip days: one-way mirror tint for the lettering, limo black over the top of it for the background - gets you black on silver and completely legal for intruding on wipers so long as it doesn't obstruct vision)

I hate to say it but will it be bright enough on a 7 when it's sunny?? It will be surprising bright in an open top car??

Hello!

Worst case with sunlight is when the sun is directly ahead and 'bleaching' the display from behind that film. I've tried to show this in the photo of this at the top of the thread - of those three stripes, the lefthand most one is in direct sun, but here's the full version:



That's an MX5 with the lid down looking straight into the sun.

I won't pretend that you can see it at all times, but I'd say its as clear as a normal dash and its really only when you're totally blinded by the sun anyway that visibility is poor. In those circumstances you're probably more bothered about seeing where you're going than your exact speed anyhow.

Again, if your're not completely sold, I'll take it back!

How does it work if I don't have a windscreen/flyscreen

Would buy one now if I had something to reflect it onto !

Ok - you win! I can't make it work without a screen...

Tinted motorcycle helmet visor, trim appropriately. Drop it on the scuttle, mark up, lay a bead of sikaflex, then bond it to the scuttle. That's probably the smallest 'aeroscreen' you could run for the Head-up Display, and the slight curve in it gives it a lot more stiffness/wind resistance than a flat piece of perspex. You could also take a look at the Defi VSD display (Google) for inspiration. (they came with a built in screen)


Pavel - depends who's asking? If the German authorities want to know who mapped that single seater in an industrial estate just outside Hockenheim, it couldn't possibly have been me. If this looks familiar though...

How's tricks?

I actually like the look of the aero that caterham but want it full width. Just need to find one first !
