cd.thomson - 18/5/10 at 05:56 PM

Hi guys,

a friend has just got out to her car and found red/brown gunge (she might mean a viscous liquid) over her clutch pedal.

Diagnosis?

Any mechanical fluid possibilities? Hydraulic m/c? Brake fluid? Powersteering fluid? Clutch m/c?

I know nothing about these cars!

over greasing of the pedal linkage

The clutch master cylinder is located just above the clutch pedal under the dash so that might be a clue

How about heater matrix leaking rusty water? does it dissolve in water? therefore not oil based problem

dlatch - 18/5/10 at 07:59 PM

heater matrix would be my bet how old is it?

Either, clutch fluid, but thats unlikely to be described as "red" (but not unknown), or, coolant from the heater matrix which would be red.

heater matrix leak i would bet, if it was clutch you would have the low fluid on the dash as they all feed from same res

Try the sniff test. If is smells of rust it's probably heater matrix, if it smells of brake fluid then clutch cylinder, if you retch and throw up it's dogs egg.
