Dont know exactly where you are but have a look at this site for Cumbria. Other parts of the country may have a similar system.
http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/roads-transport/public-transport-road-safety/countryside-access/HOTR/Hierarchy_of_Trails_Routes.asp
Interestingly Country File tonight did a bit on the indiscriminate use of off road tracks etc by 4x4 users and bikers. I know that in the Peak District at the moment there are moves afoot to cutail the use of long standing tracks by offroaders. the problem is down to unauthorised use and deviation from permitted tracks by a few that gets genuine users a very bad name. And also the Ramblers association appears to have supportsers and power at a very high level.

Saw that, it wasn't as anti-4x4 as I expected but they still were a bit vague and the "off roaders" in cars were...
errmm... interesting chaps............... It wasn't made clear that they were on a pay-to-play site.
The trial rider bloke was good but should have been allowed more say.
I have a Landy and go off roading but always check status of the routes we're off to.
It annoys me that of the thousands of miles of country lanes in this country less than 5% have vehicular access yet
the Ramblers (biggest whingers) want them closed too and regard us as the scum of the earth. Despite the fact that
if car sized things didn't clear the way the lane most of the 5% would be unusable for everyone.
However, there are a number of complete twats who disregard all advice (raised by the CF program)
and give us all a bad name.

Look at the Greenlane links on the Raiders site, they go direct to the County Council definitive online maps.

The Ramblers' attitude on this one really p155es me off.

I love to walk in the countryside, lovely frosty morning with my missus, beautiful.

But then I also like mucking about in my 4x4 too, and I really don't give a monkeys if when I'm out for my stroll a few range rovers come by having a muck about.

What is up with this bloody nation where everybody's activity HAS to be at the expense of someone elses...
