Yeah, more involved test means they can put prices up.

i doesnt mean they can put prices up.. theres going to be a few changes come mid april.. plus 16th oct the new mot certs are out. they look crap... prices will stay the same as competition is plenty.

Problem is that the garage that do our MOt's for us always charge full price and give us a discount which we pass on to the customer. We are in the process of designing a new leaflet but want it to be valid into next year so need to know what they are going to go up to so we dont loose money on MOT's

Sounds a bit like the SVA to IVA change then? Add a couple of items to test and wack the price up by 137%

johny p - 21/9/11 at 10:37 AM

theyre not going up.. ive just been on an mot QC course about 3 weeks ago and nothing was mentioned about a price increase.. we charge 35 as that is the average price around my area...

flibble - 21/9/11 at 11:11 AM

Is this anything to be concerned about? :

Engine performance:

(a) Control unit illegally modified.

(b) Illegal engine modifications

Seems like a VERY grey area. AFAIK there is no such thing as an illegal engine or "Control unit" modification. Only a modification that took the emissions over the limits would be classed as a fail but is certainly not illegal.

rodgling - 21/9/11 at 11:50 AM

Illegal modifications are not allowed? Pretty sure that has always been the case...

johny p - 21/9/11 at 11:51 AM

as long as it passes emissions you can do any engine mods you want...

£35!! I wish try £45-55 round here! thieving bas***ds

dinosaurjuice - 21/9/11 at 01:40 PM

didnt realise there was a set price for MOT's. never paid more than £35... whats the proper rate?!

johny p - 21/9/11 at 01:41 PM

i wish we could charge that... no such thing as an illegal engine mod. as long as everything that is modified is saftley carried out and it passes emissions test its ok...

johny p - 21/9/11 at 01:42 PM

proper mot rate is 54.85 but garages can charge anything they want under that price...

Sticking 4 Metro throttle bodies on a V8??

iank - 21/9/11 at 08:21 PM

Here's two examples:

Illegal engine modification - putting a 2 litre into a hatchback but leaving the v5 with a 1.0 litre on it making it cheaper to tax/insure.
Illegal ECU change - making the engine produce more CO2 than the band you're paying tax for.

Spot the theme...

Spot the theme???
Yes
The chav boy racers who have 2 ltr corsa insured as 1.2's who crash into you and then the insurance won't pay out will be found out before this happens ( good thing IMHO )
The higher emissions usually means more power ( see above statement )

ianclark1275 - 21/9/11 at 10:25 PM

the only real changes are that the air bag light on the dash now = fail?

i think thats what i heard!

There was a thread about this regarding MOT failiures for modified and remap engines and a few people who were qualified MOT men assured us this was not the case and might have produced evidence. Have a look through and find out.
