What's Wrong With Me...
scootz - 3/10/11 at 06:34 PM

... just bought a non-running Nissan 350Z (VQ35DE) engine.

Don't know what the fault/s is/are and I have no idea of what I'm going to do with it!

I need therapy!

Ben_Copeland - 3/10/11 at 06:41 PM

What were your thoughts when buying it??

Or was it drink related?

No drink involved (embarrassingly!).

I've had a hankering for stripping and re-building a 'V' engine for a while and eventually put it into a seven-style chassis one day.

It was initially the Mazda / Ford V6 lump (thanks for all the info Claire!) that I'd wanted to work with and then I saw the non-runner 350Z one on a 'BIN' or 'Best-Offer' auction on eBay. The breakers (one of the bigger ones) didn't know what was wrong with the engine, so I thought I'd throw in a cheeky 50% offer... and much to my surprise it was accepted!

It'll sit in the corner of my garage for a while methinks!

Liam - 3/10/11 at 07:00 PM

AWESOME!!

So - when it's fixed, how much power does it make? And can you weigh it please?

Ninehigh - 3/10/11 at 07:01 PM

You could sell it on www.zclub.net..

scootz - 3/10/11 at 07:03 PM

I'll weigh it when it gets here!

Been doing a bit of research and there's lots of tuning bits for the engine... individual throttle bodies, fancy flywheels, etc. Apparently 350-ish hp is achievable with improved intake, exhaust and custom ECU mapping.

big_wasa - 3/10/11 at 07:04 PM

260 bhp + and rwd nowt wrong with that

flak monkey - 3/10/11 at 07:12 PM

You are actually mad Scott.....

scootz - 3/10/11 at 07:17 PM

I wish a pox be upon eBay!

It just makes me do 'things'!

Daddylonglegs - 3/10/11 at 07:19 PM

What's wrong with impulse buying? I do it all the time. Anyhow, at least it was on a decent V not some mincy little thing

Live life to the full man! Respect

Brooky - 3/10/11 at 07:27 PM

Scootz, when you get bored of it, I'll give you half of what you paid.
That's how it works isn't it???? ;-)

scootz - 3/10/11 at 07:32 PM

Usually...

T66 - 3/10/11 at 09:22 PM

Have you got any history exactly how it's not running?

Coffee table or fixable.

And oh yes your barking Scott

Life is not a dress rehearsal, so fill your boots.

designer - 3/10/11 at 10:09 PM

Make a nice table with the block.

welderman - 3/10/11 at 10:33 PM

Once you have it fixed and running can I have first dibs. Give you 50 quid and an empty shoe box

splitrivet - 3/10/11 at 11:03 PM

Know the feeling 250 year project span but you'll probably only be here 3 score years and 10.
Cheers,
Bob

Dusty - 3/10/11 at 11:08 PM

Press rewind.

you should have said, I could have given you a 3.0 essex - I'm sure you'd hardly tell the difference from that nissan lump

RK - 4/10/11 at 12:57 AM

That DOES have appeal. I've often thought about that too, but since I'm not allowed to buy any more tyres, I don't see how this would pass inspection, I am going to watch this build, which you are going to document thoroughly (the next owner has to have some record of proof of what you've done no??) and put it off a while.

MakeEverything - 4/10/11 at 06:28 AM

Ive got the same 'feelings' for the old Cosworth V6. Quite fancy getting another for a twin turbo project in the future.

Ivan - 4/10/11 at 07:49 AM

You frighten me Scootz because I see so much of myself in you.

There but for the lack of money and space go I.

[Edited on 4/10/11 by Ivan]

franky - 4/10/11 at 09:14 AM

They're awesome engines and should make good donor engines. Because they're so reliable running used ones don't fetch much money.

What are you going to do with it?

I'm not sure what projects you've still got going on!?

scootz - 4/10/11 at 09:39 AM

I have in my Aladdin's cave:

An automatic Rover V8 engined F27 that I'm fiddling with. It'll be for sale soon (ish).

My reverse-trike. Windle are nearly finished the back end, so it'll be coming home whilst I ponder what I'm going to do at the front.

An Aprilia RSV-R engine and bits.

... and now a knackered (don't know just how knackered yet) 350Z engine!

I'm jealous!

What about the car that had the red top in?

scootz - 4/10/11 at 10:12 AM

That now belongs to Joe (Welderman).

Well, what a nice offer - Scootz - remembering you paid 5 grand for it - brooky's offering you £2500 here and now -

I'll need to come round that and inspect it once its back

scootz - 4/10/11 at 01:02 PM

Will give you a buzz when it's home!

mcerd1 - 4/10/11 at 01:07 PM

I'll have trade you for an inspection of my new garage - the frame should be going up tomorrow

though I'm not sure you can call mine an 'Aladdin's cave' - not unless Aladdin has a thing about cast iron

YAY
thanks fella

scootz - 5/10/11 at 02:16 PM

Arrived today. No external damage - phew!

I just wonder what sort of mess is inside!

I phoned the breaker to ask if they could give me a clue about its history and they explained that it had come back as a core-engine from a garage which bought a running one from them.

I'm scared to drop the sump and see how many pieces are lying in it!

scudderfish - 5/10/11 at 05:23 PM

We could have a sweepstake as to what's wrong with it.

I reckon you've got no conrods

I reckon I do... but at least one will be in pieces!

Just hoping that whatever it is, the internal structures of the engine are good! Fingers crossed!

Wadders - 5/10/11 at 06:27 PM

It's not the impulse buying thats the worry...... It's the impulse selling that makes me chuckle

Al.

Nope.

But I have heard the term THERE'S ONE BORN EVERY MINUTE. Where's the spacker-smiley when you need one!?

scudderfish - 6/10/11 at 07:27 AM

There may be one born every minute, but only one special one every day.

scootz - 6/10/11 at 03:14 PM

Whipped off one of the heads... mmmm crunchy!

Also noticed that there was shrapnel in the plenum... how the hell does it get in there!?

D Beddows - 6/10/11 at 03:39 PM

Coffee table it is then

I reckon it's cost you near on £200 to take that head off in terms of gasket replacement and to fix the engine will cost you more than to buy a working one

your worst buy ever? - where's the paperbag/getting my coat smiley when you need it LOL

scootz - 6/10/11 at 05:13 PM

Why thank you Mr Beddow... glad you're happy!

You'll be even more delighted when you see what i found lurking under the other head...

blakep82 - 6/10/11 at 05:17 PM

wtf*ck is that?! conrod and piston?! oooh

stevegough - 6/10/11 at 05:25 PM

suprised it was a non-runner?

RickRick - 6/10/11 at 05:25 PM

What happened to the rest of the piston?

big_wasa - 6/10/11 at 05:29 PM

As long as you had fun mate

raguri - 6/10/11 at 05:32 PM

My bet is the engine had been used for drifting/racing with no mods and revved far to hard!
But, bad luck to be honest, always run the risk when you buy non working stuff.

scootz - 6/10/11 at 05:36 PM

Of course I'm not f*****g surprised! I'm not a complete fanny!

Can't say I'm not disappointed though that there's so little salvage in it.

Don't think I've heard anyone say "spacker" since 1988

Ingested a turbo?

mcerd1 - 6/10/11 at 09:41 PM

turn it into some kind of sculpture then sell it for 4x what it cost you

Ninehigh - 6/10/11 at 10:13 PM

Hmm, use the ingested engine parts to create an "exploding engine" effect (like the trophies on Burnout Revenge)

Call it "Piston Broke" and say it's a tribute to the push for excellence that causes your downfall

You'll make thousands if you're arty-farty enough about it

D Beddows - 7/10/11 at 07:47 AM

I'm not reveling in your misfortune Scootz by any means! In my time I've bought enough 'working' engines that were actually far from working to do that Having said that it has taught me if breakers say an engine is a 'non runner' odds are it's really REALLY broken.......... and one that is really REALLY broken

matt_gsxr - 7/10/11 at 08:37 AM

Sympathies.

I bought two engines from a sidecar chap in Scotland. Both run, one slightly down on power.

First engine, blown cylinder head (no compression on 2).
2nd Engine, 4 valves smacked to hell, 2 of them embedded in a piston.

Lots of spare parts though!

CNHSS1 - 7/10/11 at 09:06 PM

did you weigh it complete?
