What's Preferable on a High Powered Mini... FWD or RWD?
scootz - 19/2/12 at 01:51 PM

I'm not up to anything... promise!

Was just wondering if the switch from FWD to RWD on a vehicle with such a small wheelbase would have any significant handling characteristic changes?

Very significant! The Z Cars minis always look a bit twitchy to me.

I've been in fwd one with an R1 in it. It torque steered like hell, personally I think a rwd one would be much more fun.

Do you think the Fiat will be twitchy Scott ?

However if your asking this question, Locost would rightly assume your up to something.

So what is it ?

I guess it depends if you get your weight balance and suspension setup correct.

IMHO a mini should remain front wheel drive.... its not really a mini anymore if its RWD

Shouldn't be... it'll just wheelie everywhere!

AWD

I saw a cossie powered mini at an autosolo. It was truly rubbish. Maybe OK at santa pod, but just couldn't get the power down any sense at all.
I guess you really want 4WD

hay up scott i had a 1293 turbo in my mini and made 193 bhp at 24psi 210 lbft of torque and it was insane torque steer lol

There were auto grassers wheely-ing at this years Autosport!

Minicooper - 19/2/12 at 07:34 PM

Either fwd or rwd can made to work very well in a mini, here is a fwd mini with about 380hp

I've been in a z cars mini, they are twitchy and most seem to handle poorly even ones that have been factory setup, maybe because they use trailing arms on the rear which were given up in the 60's probably for good reason. The only z car I seen that handles well is there racer and I believe that uses semi trailing arms at the rear

Cheers
David

tut tut tut. RWD of course proper YB engine, about 400bhp IIRC

morcus - 20/2/12 at 02:53 AM

I'm gonna throw my hat in with the 'not really a mini unless it's FWD' school on this one but I've nothing to base that on.

That's not the bright yellow Mini, is it?

A little smoky....
