OT: Replacing Transit rear cross member
vinny1275 - 10/5/12 at 12:14 PM

Afternoon all,

SWMBO's 2001, FWD, SWB transit has just failed it's MOT on the rear crossmember being rotten. All the other bodywork and chassis is fine. It's part-way through a conversion into a camper, but thankfully there's not much to be removed off the floor (the unwin rails and some wooden ribs for the ply floor to sit on). Has anyone ever had to do this, is it an economical repair? It's nto something I could realistically do myself. The garage weren't sure of the cost as they didn't know how much they'd need to cut out to get to something weldable...

Any ideas?

Cheers

It looks like a common fault, you can get a new X member for £50. At that price I would look at chopping the old one out completely and putting a new one in. Whether it's economical depends on how much you have invested in it and how much you are willing to spend on it now otherwise it is scrap.

Thanks Pete,

Where can you get cross members from, just direct from Ford?

Ford do them or ebay allpartsford sometimes has them. Just make sure it's the right one as there are a couple of different versions.
