Hi, can the collective help with some options for a female friend who is learning to drive after many years living in central London?
Looking for something to do regular trips from London to the SE coast, with reasonable space for a max budget of 3k'.
My first thought was a 1.25l Fiesta, 5 yr old with about 60k.
Bearing in mind she'll have to use garages for any maintenance and will want to keep it for a few years.
Would the 'boy racer' tax apply for an older driver?

Might be better off getting a larger car then your not competing with young people for the used small cars, which puts the price up.
Don't see any reason why it wouldn't be bad car for her though.
Dacia can be bought new for £59 month!!!

Probably cheaper in the long run than a used ford, as you'll probably get a good deal on a servicing package.
Do some "Go Compare" quotes to see what is ultimately affordable
Hadn't thought about a larger car. Though something Mondeo-sized might be a bind in Hackney.
Perhaps somethng Focus-sized.
She certainly doesn't want anything new - it's bound to get bumped/scratched.
I wouldn't mind a Duster though. 
I've suggested she get insurance quote shopping.

Suggest a Focus 1.6 petrol. Cheap insurance, good safety, reliable and cheap to fix. Plenty to choose from and not too big to find a parking space, fit some parking sensors and she will be a happy bunny!
What about lease a new car like a Ibiza or something they are about 150 a month for 3 years ok you never own it but you get 3 years ins 3 years road
side n warranty. So she would save potential repair costs .....
£150 per month x 36 = 5400 I know it's a bit more but woud she get insurance for less than 2400 over 3 years plus servicing plus repair costs
3k is 85 a month so she would need all the above for less than 65 per month...........
Ps for 3k get a mini not really high insurance and good cars. 2003-2005 I would guess....
I'm going to suggest she gets some quotes for something larger, like the 1.6 Focus.
I'm a Focus fan - my 2.0l Mark 1 Phase 2 has it's 10 year birthday this month.

With the lease option you have to add on to the figures the cost of fixing any minor dents and scratches when you give it back.
Also, when comparing, you can knock off the resale value of the any car that she could have bought - buy a 3 grand car now, look after it for 3 years,
its still going to be worth 1 - 1.5k. And im sure that a 40 yo lady can get insurance for £750 for her first year, falling in subsequent years if she

I'd agree focus sized is good, it will be safer than something fiesta sized. Really just wants the most economical version since fuel bills will
be a nasty shock to someone not used to them.

With regards to insurance, if the new driver has a boyfriend/husband or family member that is already an established driver (IE lots of NCD), adding
them as a named driver on the policy can drop the price (in most cases).
As for cars, I'd also recommend a Focus. But don't let her buy one herself, if she's not clued up she could end up with a dealer
selling her a lemon.
