How to wreck a lotus elise....
johnny chimpo - 12/11/13 at 06:39 PM

If you're bored and looking for a wee chuckle have a gander at this thread:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18527080

Gets a bit more interesting towards the end when the guy who sued the OP (from when he previously did a "200mph RX7 budget build" shows up.

bimbleuk - 12/11/13 at 07:07 PM

Becoming a bit legendary as there's the original? thread on Pistonheads plus numerous threads on forums all over now following the exploits!

Sadly I'm a regular on the FDUK forum and that little bit of bad blood keeps popping up from time to time.

that can't be for real, surely?

Julian Thrussell - 12/11/13 at 08:37 PM

You have to hand it to the man, there are no half measures - when he decides to make a make a race car, he goes for it. I would not like to be in the same county when he takes it into the track though...

britishtrident - 12/11/13 at 08:39 PM

............................................... just so wrong it brought me close to tears

britishtrident - 12/11/13 at 08:41 PM

This is how kids grow up if you let them watch nothing but Top Gear.

gaz_gaz - 12/11/13 at 08:44 PM

Blast from the past.
I remember him trying to build an RX7 capable of 200mph in 1.7miles from a standing start for under 10k or something ridiculous.

Wadders - 12/11/13 at 08:48 PM

Nice...Just needs a twin turbo V12 with nitrous to finish it off.........oh and maybe a flame paint job and chain link steering wheel.

balidey - 12/11/13 at 08:49 PM

two very good lessons there on 'adding weight' and 'creating drag'. Just what every good 'race car' needs.
And pretty too....

perksy - 12/11/13 at 08:50 PM

It started off ok and then that happened

You mean this -

RobBrown - 12/11/13 at 09:56 PM

I don't get it - Apart from it looking shocking, there are a number of practical restrictions that I don't appear to understand.

1. How does he afford it - He claims he earns little in a call centre, yet has the cash to ruin a number of cars without batting an eyelid. I'm fast approaching my Forties, been working for over twenty years, in a relatively well paid job, but having to justify every £50 I spend in the garage. Maybe it's what I missed when I was young and have different priorities than he does?!.

2. Why the fixation on a single objective i.e. the 200mph mark. If I had that drive I'd be looking to build something that had sustainability. In both cases of the RX7 and the Elise, it's a 1 time thrill, assuming it makes it to his goal.

If he was to say that he was looking to take his Saxo, Nova, Focus, Lotus (replace as appropriate) and uplift it to give better performance on the street or track then I would have some level understanding, but to take a car (Lotus), that most would dream of owning and completely massacre it like he has, all on a call centre operative wage just doesn't seem right.

I'm Puzzled, and to a certain extent feel sorry for him that no-one close to him has taken him to one side and advised him to stop wasting his hard earned cash.

Also - I'm sure I would have stopped posting updates once I realised that no-one was taking it seriously.

Yeah a whole lot things don't add up, but the guy comes over as a fantasist, we have no idea how he acquired the car.

snakebelly - 12/11/13 at 10:40 PM

Maybe he's Japanese?

I take it you're all familiar with time attack then? :p

Not saying its right, but its what they do!

bimbleuk - 13/11/13 at 03:23 AM

Watch it guys this thread has the potential to run on and on

The parallel thread on FDUK has reached 20 pages and the little spat has rear it's head on that one too.

I'm guilty too of posting a shot of one of the bosozoku cars on there as well.

At least those Time Attack cars are being driven on track and those aero additions are probably added to counter handling imbalances from real feedback. Hence why they look a little "bolted" on.

I had a look back through the 200mph build thread and realised I have the GRP bonnet Jon made at Atomic on my RX7!

Also here's the page you really want to read on that thread...

I think it is saying something about it when the wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_attack) spends half it's time talking about video games.

Ben_Copeland - 17/11/13 at 12:03 PM

Did a bit of research on the guy.

He's not only ruined a RX7, he's also known for ripping people off including a bodyshop

Then he bought a M5 and wanted to strap a huge turbo to it etc but that's gone quite since he's started butchering this lotus.

I even realised I've spoken to him on Facebook when he was asking equinox questions about the Elise/exige bodywork

In defence of Time Attack cars, many have huge amounts of money and development heaped upon them and their lap times reflect that.
The Lotus pictured has spent a fair bit of time in MIRAs wind tunnel with tye aero program run by aero consultant Simon McBeath so definietly arent barryboys cars!!
MIRAs currently about £6k per day plus Simons time...

Google Subaru Gobstopper and watch Ollie Clarks antics at the wheel, truly stunning car, engineering and driving.

And if you need further convincing, Ollie Clarks Dad could drive a bit too, a certain Roger Clark, legendary rally driver...

Just because TA aero looks odd doesnt make it wrong.

Im not saying said Elise bloke knows his arse from his elbow mind, but dont slag off Time Attack by the same token
