Build a Locost in under 6 hours!!!!!
l0rd - 16/9/08 at 06:00 AM

I know that most of you have been building your Locost for several years. I don't know how you managed that.

I know that it took me less than 6 hours. I went to bed last night at 12:30 and by 6:30 today i was racing it. Then the bloody alarm woke me up.
At least I had a smile in my face.

Do you dream of the soon to be Mrs Whippy (if she gets her way) and all the junior Whippy's running around your feet.............and then wake up with a smile on your face when you realise it was only a dream, and all your projects are still outside / dotted around the house??

Oh, disapointed. I was hoping to see a proper build using time lapse photography.

Do you recon its possible to turn a complete kit from say RAW into a working car in less than 6 hours?

Given a crack team of highly trained technicians, I recon it would be possible!....NO TEA BREAKS!!!

Caterham........ yes
Westfield........ hmmmmm maybe, just maybe
other kits........ fat chance

Too much panelling, brake lines etc to do with a standard kit, and there is only so much room around a car to get a few people working on it.

yeah thats it, though some times I have to get up and double check there isn't a skip outside!

then you need to do sub assemblys.

IE someone puts the seats together then at hte last minute, drops them in and the person already lying under the car does them up. You'd need to have captive bolts etc so only one person was needed to do things up.

Problem areas would be things like fuel / brake lines. Perhaps these should go in first.

(i'm assuming everything is pre made and an exact fit - ie the car is built, stripped down and rebuilt)

mstepien - 16/9/08 at 08:33 AM

Not a chance.
I remember on one show one manufacturer (I think it was MK) assembled the car over two days. But all main elements were already preassembled.

MikeR - 16/9/08 at 10:17 AM

i thought it was GTS.

But i'm thinking having the panelling already done,

everything powder coated, having channels already laid out in the transmission tunnel (or rivet holes drilled) litterally build the car, strip it down and make sure everything is done for speed. Eg diff brackets, have the nut welded onto one side so one person can push the bolt through and do it up without hassling someone else to hold a spanner on the other side or having to get in other peoples way to hold the spanner yourself.

If you had a smile on yer face it must have been a BEC. Otherwise you'd have woken up with a frown......
