Zetec/type 9 upside down bellhousing??
Jasongray5 - 14/7/09 at 09:40 PM

Would it be possible to switch around the bellhouseing on a type 9 box, so as that the starter is where it would have been on the fwd donor?
Its not my idea, I am up for chopping the sump like everybody else?
but would like to hear opinions if possible please, and if anyone has tried this?
Cheers Guys!

The bolt pattern isn't symmetrical on either the engine or the gearbox, so you wouldn't be able to just turn it upside down. A bit of a non-starter to be honest.

that would be an expensive way of doing things, get a starter from a 1.8 cvh sierra or the 2.00 ohc sierra / granada . I have seen bellhousings modified to suit but this has been when no other option was available ie a type nine engine to an Austin 1275 a serie engine. The welding was done by a qualified welder

Cheers Guys!
This is exactly what I told my Dad, but he seems insistant that he knows best! And Im actualy going to have to demonstrate it not fitting, wasting a whole afternoon, until he gives in!
I got a new starter for a 1.8 cvh for £25. Should be here by wednesday!

Just a thought, you may be able to use an RS2000 alloy bellhousing (available new from Rally Design for fairly reasonable money). They have positions for a starter on either side, the unused location is used to access the clutch arm.

Have u got a silvertop? My cvh went straight on with the 1.8 sump.

Now then, I'm messing about with a FWD box, basically split so I have the front part (bellhousing) and am considering an adapter plate to mount my W58 Toyota box.

That would give me standard Ford mounting with starter up under the inlet and a compact clutch release arm on top...

I just need a milling machine and ali welder and I'll be there, nearly...

That give you any ideas??

Get an european bellhousing, starter is on the other side IIRC.
