Subaru impreza engine and gearbox..
scoop - 4/8/10 at 08:37 PM

Not having a full understanding of how it all works, my question is, can i fit the engine and gear box from an impreza into my car but make it only rear wheel drive?

No, its too wide to fit in even a +4 chassis.....

Thats a shame. Been offered a whole car for a very good price and was going to strip it out
Cheers anyway for dashing my dream

You could fit it in the rear off a middy, weld up the centre diff and just use the driveshafts (transaxle setup)

Or build one of these with it

Im still mentally scarred from the first build guys. I dont know if i ever will be ready to do another one. Do you want to talk to me about it

IIRC you don't need to weld up the diff, just remove the transfer!

a subaru does not have a transfer box
.m.

Aha, I knew I'd seen this done somewhere!

"Its actually easy to make a scooby box 2wd, and fortunately because the scoobys started out with a high front end torque split the box is not too weak when run as a 2wd box (although nowhere as near strong as say a propely designed transaxle)(just look how small the diff is for example). You need to strip the box, remove the centre diff, and have a "spool" centre machined, effectively this simply fixes the power input (which normally goes to the outside of the centre diff, and is then split front and rear) to the front output shaft. then rebuild the box with the rear output shaft removed and blanked off, and there you go, one 2wd scooby box."

Taken from a thread on PH!

Funnily enough I once had a 2wd Subaru estate in my care which came from Ireland. Never seen another one since though!

Aren't a lot of 'lesser' Imprezas - 1.6 pauper spec etc - 2WD anyway? i.e. isn't there a production 2WD box that will just bolt on?

some pics of an impreza 5sp dog box from my rally car.....might be of some use?
!st pic shows the broken input shaft....which has now been upgraded to a two piece unit...

If the box above is at the strip down stage, it normally hurts the wallet...!

Mmmmm gears.

So I guess that gearbox layshaft/output shaft must be hollow, the centre diff goes on the back, then drives through the hollow shaft to that front diff? Am I right am I right
