hi all, am i right in thinking that white gunk on the oil filler cap means i have blown the head gasket on my zetec and if yes how does that effect the iva if at all?

Often a symptom of the engine oil not reaching working temperature, due not enough long runs or running without a thermostat or by-pass.

Dip the oil and see if the white gunk is in the sump too
If it was me i would NOT run the engine without more investigation

What make of oil are you using ? Duckhams use to be a bit scummy years ago but i have not used it for years

I plan to change the engine once the iva is done. How will it effect the iva?

Every gallon of fuel burned produces something like 20 gallons of water most of this goes out via the exhaust but some of it gets past the piston rings and into the sump, in normal running the crankcase and top end of engine get warm enough to vaporise the moisture and clear it out via the breather into the air intake. However if the engine is never allowed to get properly hot or the positive crankcase ventilation breather system is not working moisture will condense out to form an oil water emulsion.

I have a V8 Disco with the same problem. The biggest problem I have is I can't afford to get it up to it's normal running temp with the price of fuel!!!
