As the title.
Loads about and good engine can it be used or has it.
It produces 130bhp in a cav sri standard which is 30bhp more than pinto standard well i think thats right?
Gremlin, yes it can, there's someone here using that very engine.
Apart from the obvious engine mounts needing making up you'll need to sort a gearbox. You can use a manta rwd box, possibly a carlton (don't
know about the 8v, I'm using a 16v Xe) or a bellhousing to a type 9 sierra box which is what I'm going to do.
Andrew.
Northy is the man to contact / search his posts for info...
Ned.
Hi-de ho there neighbour!
Yes it can be used. More torque than the 16V
The block is the same as the 16V, so the bellhousings designed to fit a type 9 fit. You'll prob have to make your own engine mounts, but thats
not to hard.
Any questions, give us a shout
If you have some pictures of the mounts you have used that would be good and have you any idea off cost to link type 9 to it?
Also with the pinto you need to modify the sump to fit do you need to do a similar thing with the Vx?
Thanks in advance for any responces.
Just about to put some pictures in my folder. There are some of engine mounts, and ali bellhousing.
There is also a couple of the sump. I've fitted a Caterham Ali sump, got it second hand from the Blatchat site. But you could just modify the
standard one.
northy,
if it's the same block i should have a second head soon if you wanted to ditch your torque for some more power?!
edit: caterham dry sump systems go for about £350 second hand in motorsport news or sbd do a short wet sump for £260ish.
I've found a s/h qed dry sump pan for £140, just need a pump to go with it!

Ned,
I'll have a word with my engine builder friend about the head. I know nothing about engines!
I got my Caterham sump for £100 s/h off Blatchat. Saw one at Newark for £140!
Cheers
QED do a top quality ally sump for £217 inc v.a.t and postage.
are you two talking wet or dry?
another alternative (did i mention it already?) is a manta 1.8 sump, not perhaps as much ground clearance but a rwd application nonetheless.
Ned.
Looks very good in the bay.
Did you make the engine mounts yourself or can you get them from Caterham or else where?
caterham & westfield will have mounts for those engines, dunnon prices! cheaper alternative might be manta (same block) or omega? yukspeed make
mounts to fit the vx into a mk2 escort for rallying...
Ned.
Just replyed to your post in for sale / wanted re vx 16v xe.
I have been looking for one of those for ages and had no luck hence the question regards the 8v.
Where is down here? Im in dorset and am willing to travel went to newark kitcar show on round trip of 550 miles hoping to get some help in finding
one.
I,m talking wet sump. It's a nice piece of kit. I've just bought one.
Barry.
Back to the original post is the 2lt 8v 130bhp even if its not in sri or has it got to be the sri engine?
Also i can get engine mounts from w*******d for £30 Plus vat for the 16v XE, will these fit the 8v without modifiction?
[Edited on 30/6/03 by Gremlin]
My sump was a wet one pictures in my folder.
Made the mounts myself, not too hard to do. The Yukspeed engine mounts are just a kit of similar bits of steel, with the holes drilled.
Mine is from an SRI, and hence a 130. The answer is.... not sure. Mine has whats called the 'high port head', which gives it more torque and
poss a bit of wxtra power.
I'm also 99.9% sure the blocks are the same, so the mounts should fit.
Cheers
Thanks thats good enough for me at the moment. I have been offered a engine out of a SRi so that should be 130bhp.
If the engine is not 100% what can be done to them are they as tweekable as the 16v?
Can they be rebored etc if nessesary or am i looking for an imaculate engine to start with?
The 16v and 8v block are externally the same, so engine mounts, sumps etc will interchange. BUT the 16v head will not bolt straight on to the 8v engine, the pistons are different, and there is a one-way oil valve fitted to the 16v block for the cyl head. You would also need the cam belt pulleys, water pump (IIRC) block breather pipe etc to convert.
I now have my dry sump pan, details here
I just noticed a caterham short wet sump on ebay if anyones interested.
Ned.
Thanks for all the replys.
Final question really for anyone who can help. If the engine i have been given is not quite right can much work be done on an 8v Vx engine?
get the bits to convert to a 16v?
or try calling sbd/qed they should know about the 8v, as they're specialist vauxhall people. (shop around on prices though, they can be quite
different)
Ned.
I would prefure to get hold of an 16v and use that but if i have to go 8v im not looking to convert to 16 just checking that over boring and skimming
etc can be done on this engine if it needs it or like the 4Age do you need to get a good quality engine to start with because only limited thinks can
be done in resturation.
Hope that makes sense. Not really talking about power tweeks just ones to get engine running perfect again.
Assuming the same rules apply to the 8v as the 16v you can get it skimmed, bored out, linered, whatever. we've done this with 16v block which
apart from the pistons and an oil valve as stu16v says are the same. i've also known this to be the case with the late manta's that used the
same block.
Ned.
Gremlin,
Something else to tell you. I had to make an Alternator bracket at the weekend to mount it on the exhaust side, as it will foul on the carbs with orig
bracket in orig possition.
Think this has to be done with 16V aswell though. Will post pictures once its painted up
Well thats ok then. I have been given a 8v out of a k reg cav SRi so i know that worst case i can strip it and use this engine after a little TLC.
Still looking for a 16v though even if i finish the car with 8v i will still be looking for 16v especially if it uses the same bell houseing and
engine mounts it will be an easy and cheap way to gain a power bost.
Gremlin,
go for hte 8v if that's what you've got, the block is the same so it'll be an in/out swap for a 16v. engine mounts and belllhousing
will all fit.
re: alternators, as northy says you need to move it to exhaust side (unless using standrad plenum + injecton though will need cutting down to fit),
worth getting a smaller one IMO, daihastu has been mentioned (see siert's site), another cheap alternative is a 2cv one (low power i know but you
won't have a heater, aircon, stereo, power steering etc etc to worry about.) i'm gonna try the 2cv route.
Ned.
I've used a ford alternator. It came from my Cortina. It's either a LRA100 or LRA 101, or something like that. It's quite small, but
more importantly cheap and easy to get hold of.
Alternators don't tend to like being mounted right next to exhausts
maybe i'll need some heat proof wrap or something. thinking about it, i'll probably have to mount my dry sump pump on the exhaust side, so
alternator may well go under the carbs instead, just a bit lower down.
Ned.
Dame so i cant run a huge incar stereo with 3K of sound system, a playsation and dvd player!
Oh well..
you could if you made an oversize chassis / got an extension (ello, ello) and carried a little honda generator....
Ned.
