Transponders

Looks like a requirement of the series is a transponder. Any one have any experience of thse? costs?

They're available at a discount to 750MC members for £125 - See Here
I think the price for non-members is around the £150 mark.

Alternatively, you can hire them from the club itself, on a per-event basis for (IIRC) £25 per race.

Simple enough to fit I understand, I'll be ordering mine soon so I'll post my experiences when I get round to fitting it (probably over the Christmas hols - my mother-in-law is coming to stay....).

I used some many years ago when racing Fiesta`s they then mounted in a plstic surround to the Window and worked fine had no problems and proved reliable aswell as accurate.

Received this the other week from another web ring, sounds like very useful info for those more advanced on their build than me :-(

"The transponder must be mounted vertically at a max height of 60cm with no signal obstruction downwards. This means no metal nor carbon fibre surfaces between the transponder and track"

They seem to point downwards on to the track, so do not need to be mounted on the outside of the car necessarily - a convenient internal chassis member mighht work?

Transponder placement

We had transponders imposed on Mighty Minis last season (2002). The best placement seemed to be under the front offside wing which gave protection to the transponder in case of a collision (they are expensive after all), it was protected from any heat sources, and it had a direct line of sight down to the track.
I agree with Deckman that the best place to site it would be on an internal chassis member.

Does that mean it can't be in the engine bay?

Next stupid question,
I know the transponder will generate a signal; so the tracks computers can do lap times, but is it used to decide position?
ie the further forward it is, the earlier it will cross the line .. .

Aparently they are not used to define track position,but if it were a 'photo finish' and the clarke of cource saw that one car had registered it's time first, ('cos the transponder was fitted at the front ), Which car do you think they would probably award the win????

This may not be the official line, but do you want to take the chance ??

the actual timing is done by light beam the transponder purely denotes which driver it is

Phew, in that case I can mount it on the bulkhead in front of the driver. I was agonising over whether to try and find a way to mount it in the nosecone....

I think you will find that the transponder does the timing thats what its for...
